There is a well known western artist, John Ford Clymer (1907-1989).
He did illustrations for The Saturday Evening Post, as well as a lot
of famous western art (Lewis and Clark, etc.) My husband is a
descendant of John FORD Clymer. I once bid on, and won, an "original
oil by John Clymer". To my chagrin, my husband, and his mother, told
me that this particular John Clymer is not the same person as John
FORD Clymer. The picture I bought was of a lovely seaside picture.

SO today, I see an auction up on Ebay, and I know that the seller is
making the same mistake I did; he thinks his John Clymer is John FORD
Clymer.

He even links to an auction house that is selling a similar piece, and
THEY say it is John FORD Clymer. They even say they have provenance
from Sotheby's!

I've searched Google myself, as I am pretty web-savvy, but can't find
any information on this "other" John Clymer, the one that paints
seasides and pretty landscapes in more of a pastel palette (versus the
western landscapes of John Ford Clymer, and his brown and green
palette). Can someone find SOME information on who this other artist,
John Clymer, is?

Let me know if I can provide further information :)

It seems most likely to me that there isn't a "different" John Clymer.
A look at the Getty's Union List of Artist Names only shows one John
Clymer:

Perhaps you could try contacting the Clymer Museum of Art and asking
if they are aware of any of these pastel landscapes. It would make
sense that his early works would vary greatly from the established
style of his later years. Here is their contact information:

My mother-in-law is John Ford Clymer's daughter...and she swears these
aren't her dad's. It seems they know of this other "John Clymer", and
it's not the same as her father. I'm hoping *someone* can find me
information on him.

Thanks, though!

I have a pastel impressionest stlye painting very similiar to the one
posted on e-bay. It was purchased in Birmingham, Al. about 20 years
ago. The signature appears to be JOHN CLYMER and signed similiar to
the one posted on e-bay. In researching "John Clymer", I too have not
found anything other than "Clymer", the western artist. They can't be
the same in my opinion.
