Question ID: 431356
This question has two parts.

1) How many people take the SAT every year?
2) How many people take the SSAT? (The SSAT is an exam based on the
SAT that is required for admission to some private high schools.)

Nice but not necessary:

3) How many people take the ISEE? Generally speaking, which schools
require the SAT and which require the SSAT?

Thank you!

Hello.

(1)
"...more than two million students take the SAT every year."
source: CollegeBoard.com - About the SAT
http://collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/about.html

" About 2.3 million students took the SAT during the 2003-2004 school
year, including 1.4 million college-bound seniors, says Brian
O'Reilly, the executive director of SAT information services at the
New York-based College Board, a century-old, nonprofit association of
schools and colleges. About 52 percent of students repeat the test to
try for a better score, he says."
source: Bloomberg.com
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=10000103&sid=aB.67F2afysc&refer=us

(2)
Approximately 55,000 students take the SSAT every year.
source: Memberanda - SSAT
http://www.memberanda.org/2005XXII_NO3/1.asp

(3)
"With over 23,000 students taking the ISEE every year, the
standardized exam provides admission testing for lower level (grades 4
and 5), middle level (grades 6 and 7) and upper level (grades 8 to 11)
students. "
http://www.secondaryschoolsusa.com/article.cfm?artid=4

Colleges and universities (post-secondary schools) require the SAT.
Private secondary schools (grades 9-12) require the SSAT.
The lower-level ISEE is for students in grades 4 & 5.
The middle-level ISEE is for students in grades 6 & 7.
The upper-level ISEE is for students in grades 8 through 11.

-----
search strategy:
"students took the sat in"
ssat test volume
"students taking the isee"

Thanks.

Hi juggler-ga,

I actually need to know the total number of people who take the SAT,
worldwide, not just in the U.S. Thanks for your good information so
far! Can you (or someone else) send me world totals on the SAT?

Thank you,

fieldlily-ga

Hi,

As far as I can tell, the 2.3 million number cited by Bloomberg would
include all students (both in the U.S. and worldwide).

"About 2.3 million students took the SAT during the 2003-2004 school
year, including 1.4 million college-bound seniors, says Brian
O'Reilly, the executive director of SAT information services at the
New York-based College Board, a century-old, nonprofit association of
schools and colleges. About 52 percent of students repeat the test to
try for a better score, he says."

If we do a search for just the nationwide SAT administrations, the
results seems to be lower. See:

Hi

Note that SATs are done in several countries across the world.

Can juggler clarify which countries he/she is referring to - it looks
like just America.

For example, in the UK, at the end of key stage 1, 2 and 3, every
child will take SATs.

Dear Ratty,
My answer refers to the United States of America. The U.S.A. is
clearly the implied locus of the customer's question, as the ISEE and
SSAT are U.S. examinations. I hope that you find this clarification
satisfactory.
Regards,
juggler
