I'm looking for a portable MP3 (or OGG) player (flash or HD) that can
create a log file of what's being played. Every time a file starts
playing, a time stamped entry should be made. Ideally, when the player
is reconnected to the computer, the log should be easily retrievable
as a text file. Basically, I want to completely keep track of what I'm
listening to, without having to do it manually.

Are there any currently available players that can do this? If not, is
there any player that can be easily programmed/hacked to provide this
functionality?

What price point are you thinking of?

Alternatively you could create playlists on your computer and use
those on your player, then you would know what was played.

The price is not an issue, within reasonable limits. If the only
player that can do what I want costs $1000, I will probably buy it.

Creating playlists on the computer and play those on the portable
player will only provide a very partial solution to my problem (and I
can do this already with my NetMD Minidisc player).
