I am interested in both largest by population *and* largest by area in
order that the 4 lists - English top 10 by area, British top 10 by
area, English top 10 by population and British top 10 by population
can be compared with one another.

cheers

Hi phanerothyme,

After several hours of research, I was only able to compile a list of
the largest cities in terms of population. I could not, however, find
a reliable source for size in terms of area.

If this information interests you, let me know.

Best regards,
Rainbow

OK, We'll take the largest cities by population - that's cool. Can you
also stick something in about your sources, or your choices of
material - just the briefest statement will do. Great!

Hi phanerothyme,

Thank you for accepting the information I have gathered as an answer
to your question.

The following is the result of my research for the ten largest cities
in the UK and the ten largest cities in England, in terms of
population. The sources I used for my research are listed below. I
used several websites for my research, since some of the information
found on some sites were older than others. However, after detailed an
extensive with numerous other websites, the list compiled is as
accurate as possible.

Top 10 cities in the UK (by population)

1. London 7,074,265
2. Birmingham 1,020,589
3. Leeds 726,939
4. Glasgow 616,430
5. Sheffield 530,375
6. Bradford 483,422
7. Liverpool 467,995
8. Edinburgh 448,850
9. Manchester 430,818
10. Bristol 399,633

Top 10 cities in England (by population)

1. London 7,074,265
2. Birmingham 1,020,589
3. Leeds 726,939
4. Sheffield 530,375
5. Bradford 483,422
6. Liverpool 467,995
7. Manchester 430,818
8. Bristol 399,633
9. Kirklees 388,807
10. Croydon 338,200

Sorry, but there's something wrong with the answer above. Croydon is
not a city/town in its own right and few people (except maybe a
resident) would regard it as such. It is a borough (ie local
administrative area) of London, and its population of 338,200 is
included in the London population of 7,074,265. Unfortunately, the UK
Government Statistics websites cited in the answer (ie the first two
URLs) don't make it clear that their "top tens" are not cities but
local authority areas. (This is why London doesn't appear at the top,
or anywhere else, in their lists.) For cities/towns in their own
right, the third website quoted above -
http://www.citymayors.com/gratis/uk_topcities.html - is more useful;
it indicates that the 10th town in the England list above should be
Wirral with a population of 329,179.
