Looking for a free source for information on current and historical
price-to-earnings (PE) ratios for various global financial market
indices and/or asset classes.

E.g., the PE ratio of the S&P 500 is 18.2, the PE of the "emerging
markets" asset class is 25.4.  Optimal would be historical time-series
of the ratios (e.g., a chart or table showing how the PE ratio has
varied over time).

I've been to Reuters and Yahoo! Finance, but haven't found what I'm looking for.

Judging from the following, you would probably have to purchase that
type of data from the entity managing that particular index.  See, for
example, the sources noted in the S&P500 PE ratio chart at
http://flagship5.vanguard.com/VGApp/hnw/VanguardViews?FW_Event=vviewsnewsletters&chunk=/freshness/News_and_Views/news_ITVwinter2005_ALL_mktbarom_ALL.html&Season2=Winter&Year2=2005.
