Hi There ! I need to plant some fast-growing trees. Here are two vendors I've found: www.austrees.com www.fast-growing-trees.com Here's my problem: I need to plant hundreds of trees. Hence, it is important I get either a ridiculously low price or a big volume discount. Yes...I am a cheapskate. A 5-star answer would be a provider of fast-growing trees who is dirt cheap. heh heh heh All comments greatly appreciated! Thanks. ron | |

Dear nronronronro-ga; I am delighted to be answering another one of your questions. I think your best bet is Paulownia trees (aka Royal Empress trees). They grow at a rate of 8-10 feet per year (10-15 feet per year in some regions) and zoom to an astounding height of about 30 feet (as high as 50 feet in some regions) in relatively short order. It is not uncommon to see the trees reach 1-2 feet in trunk circumference in a year or two. The trees are becoming wildly popular for the amount of highly desirable wood they produce, their beautifully scented flowers, as well as for their abundant shade (they have enormous leaves that must be seen to be believed). Depending on where you buy the seedlings you can get them as low a $1 per seedling in bulk and perhaps less if you buy in greater volume directly from a grower. I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise, I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. Best regards; Tutuzdad ? Your decision tree: 1, Are you growing logs, biomass, shade ....? 2, Sort the limiting factors to growth - frost, rainfall, genetics, soils 3, How much can you spend on establishment and maintenance? 4, Compare the above with what seems to work in your area. Good luck |

How fast is fast? I live in a prime Xmas tree growing area and seedlings are both cheap in large quantities and make a 5-10 ft hedge in only about 7 years. Otherwise most "fast-growing" "trees" are actually bushes or even grass (bamboo) - also, fast-growing also usually means brittle and short-lived. |

Hi Ron I planted 40 cottonwoods 3 feet apart. In less than 3 years I had a darn wall blocking my neighbors view of my house. I got the cottonwoods during bare root season.. I paid $2.47 each. Today these little trees are well over 25 feet tall....I'm loven it. Bruce |

This looks like a useful place to start looking: http://www.naturehills.com/new/product/trees_subcategories.aspx?catname=Fast+Growing Apparently you can input your climate, etc. conditions to narrow the search. As Ozforester points out, your choice depends on what you want to achieve. |

It should be obvious, but the answer might also depend on whether you live in The Yukon or the Fla. Keys. |

siliconsamurai, Thanks. I've often wondered if there is a trade-off between fast growth and longevity. Also, whether there is a trade-off betwen fast-growth and strength. Thanks for writing! ron |

arizonaboy, Thanks for your comments. I will be planting in two very different climates---one is El Paso, Texas. My hunch is, your climate in Arizona is similar. Thanks again for the great insights! ron |
