Why would commandos lisp at night? this is a question on an acting workshop application. the other two questions i answered already have to do with a poem by coleridge about kublai khan and the other about aristotle's three unities of drama. not sure if this is literary reference or a joke??? LISP is a coder or programmer language i think sometimes used for military simulations but i don't get the "at night" part, if this is to be taken literally. |

Only thing I can think of is that the sibilant hiss of an "S" sound is actually quite loud, and carries. The "th" sound is softer. |

I think Hagan is correct. C. S. Lewis refers to this in one of the "Chronicles of Narnia" books: "In 'The Last Battle,' Jill, Eustace and Tirian sneak into a barn guarded by Calormene soldiers at night to discover that the false Aslan is really a donkey, Puzzle, covered in a lion skin. Tirian admires Jill's 'commando' skills because she knows to whisper 'thee better' rather than 'see better,' because the sibilant or hissing sound produced by pronouncing an "s" is more easily overheard." http://killdevilhill.com/c.s.lewischat/messages2/5163.html |
