In Chapter 23 of Grapes of Wrath, there is a summary of the plot of a
movie: A wealthy man and wealthy woman meet at a hamburger stand. Both
pretend to be poor so that they can be sure of the other's feelings.
For some reason they go to jail, but neither pays the bail, to avoid
being found out about having money. They finally get out, get married
and find out they both have money.

Sorry for the poor summary, this was given to me secondhand and now my
curiosity has gotten the better of me.

After consulting the person who originally posed the question, I
realize that the actual existence of this movie was purely
hypothetical. With this in mind, I'll settle for any movies with the
plot of two rich people pretending to be poor and get together.

"It Happened in Paris" (1935) has a similar plot.

"John Loder as Paul, the artistically-inclined son of an American
millionaire. Serious about his work, he has moved to Paris, where he
can find inspiration and study the masters. While there, he finds
inspiration of a different sort in the form of the beautiful
Jacqueline, played by Nancy Burne. Thinking that his wealth is a
handicap, Paul lies and pretends that he is poor. In time-honored
fashion, this causes some complications, but eventually all is
revealed and the two lovers are set on the course to living happily
ever after."

I haven't been able to determine, though, if the girl also turned out
to be rich. Would this meet your needs?

Hi juggler,

Some other reviews describe her as a 'needy young woman'.

I appreciate the time you took to look at this question. However, I
would like to know the title of a movie where both leads are
pretending to be poor, as movies where only one is are somewhat more
common. (The richest girl in the world, Let's make love, Climbing
high) etc.

Was there even such a movie?

Maybe it was just talk among the migrant workers.

"Beggar's Holiday" (1934) involves a rich man pretending to be poor:

It's not clear whether or not the woman in the plot is rich.
