What is the logic or reasoning behind the number placement on a dart
board. It seems to be random, but someone must have had a reason to
put them there to begin with. And someone else must have decided that
it was good enough to be the standard.

Thanks tlspiegel, I believe that answers my question. Although it
would have been nice to know that there is some rhyme or reason to the
numbering scheme and not some random setting that survived by chance.
I was hoping to be able to impress my dart buddies with the reason
why. Thanks again.

That looks like the authoratitve answer, and very interesting.

I have often wondered if it could be demonstrated that the numbering
was "optimal" in some way: increasing the risk of aiming at high
numbers by having adjacent low numbers, and also wondered if it
wouldn't be more difficult to have "20" horizontal, since I suspect
that the strength of the throw is a finer skill than accuracy at
horizontal aiming.
