I studied heart of darkness in college and I don't remember hearing anything about redepmtion or healing in class or got that out of reading the book. I think that self discovery is more relavent to the story as Kurtz 'goes native' and likes it so much that he excels at his job. Because he rejects society, his managers want him retrieved. The narrator (I forget the guy's name) sees a world of complete insanity and chaos, but it's the people from his society that are this way, not the local Africans. At the end of the book, he's pretty cynical as he sees society as a bit of a facade when people are at the very core, violent and animalistic. Great book, well written. If you want to learn more about it from another perspective, watch Apocalyspe Now, which was based off Heart of Darkness. |
