Question ID: 43363
The State Security Services (MI5) file on Kurt Jahnke in the UK Public
Record Office (KV2/755) contains no documents after 1 Oct 1945.

However, several documents are listed in the covering
'Minutes'(Index) through to 4 Sept 1951 but these haven't survived the
weeding process.

Minute No 44 dated 8 Dec 1949 summarises one of the missing documents
as follows:

'From Ministry of Defence stating JAHNKE in Oct 1949 had inserted a
notice in a Hamburg paper announcing his return from Moscow and that
he would in future reside in Berlin.'

How can I find and get hold of a copy of the notice that appeared in
the Hamburg paper?

There is no answer at this time.

I'd suggest perusing a good collection
of microfilms, I discovered this listing:

http://www.lib.duke.edu/access/news/current_foreign_newspapers.html

They have-
Hamburg DIE ZEIT shelf S191
(1946-)

know which Hamburg paper it was?

Hi, Again, AI

You should have said 'Big WOW' ... I never realised that there were so
many newspapers in Hamburg, with copies available so close to me in
the UK.

Many thanks.

Hi again probonopublico :)

This Kurt Jahnke thing intrigues me ! did you know there was another
spy called Jahnke who also operated in the USA ?

“FELIX JAHNKE
In 1924, Felix Jahnke left Germany for the United States, where he
became a naturalized citizen in 1930. Jahnke had attended military
school in Germany and had served in the German army as a radio
operator.

Jahnke and Axel Wheeler-Hill secured the services of Josef Klein, a
radio technician, in building a portable radio set for Jahnke's
apartment in the Bronx. Jahnke used this radio to transmit messages,
which were intercepted by the FBI, to Germany. He also visited the
docks in New York Harbor to obtain information about any vessels bound
for England.

After pleading guilty to violation of the Registration Act, Jahnke was
sentenced to serve 20 months in prison and to pay a $1,000 fine.”

Coincidence ?

Hi, thx1338-ga

Nice to hear from you again. Pleased to have titillated your interest.

No, I have never heard of Felx Jahnke before. However, Jahnke is a
fairly common German name and I suspect a coincidence.

Kurt Jahnke (1882-1945) was the principal German spy & saboteur in
North America during the 1914-1918 War and he worked for Rudolf Hess
(Hitler's Deputy) from 1934 to 1940.

Hello probonopublico :)

Yes, I know ALL about Kurt Jahnke and his wife! as I now spend some
of my spare time rummaging around in the more obscure corners of the
web trying to find more information on him. Infact 'behind the scenes'
in GA researcher world he has become quite (in)famous and researchers
post messages to each other about alleged sightings of him etc... One
of our German researchers claimed to have found his phone number
http://www.autoteile-jahnke.de/
Unfortunately (as yet) I have not found anything which you donīt
already know, but rest assured should something come to light I will
let you know.

Best regards

Hi probonopublico,

In ref to your question:

“On 14 February 1940, a man from the British Foreign Office who called
himself 'Mr Gill' visited the American Embassy in London and advised
Herschel Johnson that a serious leakage of information had been
detected and that their source in Berlin (probably Karl Markus) had
reported that he had heard Kurt Jahnke (his boss) say to his
translator, in reply to a question as to whether there was any
American material on a particular day, 'No, the Doctor has not
dictated this morning'. Evidentally, 'the Doctor' was based in London
and he had been leaking information BEFORE Tyler Kent took up his
posting there on 5 October 1939. So if he wasn't Tyler Kent (who was
arrested on 20 May 1940) who was 'the Doctor'?”
https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=36203

Here are some pieces of a jigsaw (but the pieces might not be from the
same jigsaw :)
Tell me where this story falls to bits.......

“The Doctor” is in fact Major Ritter (Abwehr) (1.) He was known as
“The Doctor” because he was also known as Dr. Hans Rankin (2.)
Ritter had lived in the USA for 10 years and “spoke American English
fluently and without a trace of an accent.” In the document I told
you about http://www.pro.gov.uk/releases/nov2001-MI5/page1a.htm “The
Doctor” is one in the same as you asked about in your question, but
didnīt actually work in the US Embassy but was passing on information
before Tyler Kent took up post (and after) The question is who was
doing the spying before Taylor Kent took up post ? “The Doctor” of
course was passing information from both the British and the Americans
back to Berlin and yes! Kurt Jahnke.

Of course another question is if "The Doctor" (in your question) is
Major Ritter then why is he being interviwed by the British on March
29th 1941 http://www.pro.gov.uk/releases/nov2001-MI5/page1a.htm
I donīt know! Maybe he was part of the "Black Orchestra" conspiracy?

"According to a recent article in the Sunday Telegraph (London), he
apparently discovered that all German agents in Britain had been
compromised and brought under hostile control. Postwar interrogation
reports in London's Public Records Office (PRO) suggest that Ritter
knew this as early as 1941 but refrained from telling his superiors"
http://www.cia.gov/csi/bulletin/csi11.html#toc5

Does any of this make sense ?
Anyway Iīm going to leave it at that for now !

All the best

THX1138

(1.) . The case collapsed in early 1941 after a visit by SNOW and
CELERY to Lisbon to meet their German ‘controller’, spymaster Major
Ritter, alias ‘the Doctor’. During debriefing back in England SNOW
claimed to have divulged everything after being accused of being a
British agent by Ritter.
http://www.pro.gov.uk/releases/nov2001-MI5/introduction.htm

(2.)“He was indeed a spy.
The name Dr. Hans Rankin and his role at the Hamburg import-export
firm
were a “cover.” Actually, he was a major in the Abwehr, Germany’s
secret service,
and his real name was Nicholaus Ritter.”
“Two years later, Major Nicholaus Ritter was sent on his crucial
espionage
mission to the United States to steal the design for the Norden
bombsight. Until
being recruited by the Abwehr in Hamburg early in 1937, Ritter had no
experience
in clandestine operations. But he did have two highly important
qualifications
for his task: he had spent ten years in the United States as a textile
manufacturer, and he spoke American English fluently and without a
trace of
an accent.”

Hi, 1138thx-ga

Many thanks for your further response.

Your hypothesis seems very plausible and your research is impressive.
I shall now follow up your leads.

It's a pity that my previous question relating to The Doctor is now
closed.

Can I re-open the question so that you can get your just desserts
(without someone else stealing your thunder)?

In any event, please post your comment here, as an answer.

Kindest Regards

Hi probonopublico,

and thank you for your nice comments!

"Can I re-open the question so that you can get your just desserts
(without someone else stealing your thunder)?"

Certainly, just repost the Doctor question
https://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=36203 and
specifically ask for THX1138 to answer it, with a note to say that the
answer will be rejected if anyone else answers it.

I have expanded my theory a bit on "The Doctor" but have to follow up
on a couple of leads before I 'post' anything. Repost the Doctor
question anyway and I will answer it.

I canīt really post an answer to this question as I havenīt researched
it, but thanks anyway.

Best Regards
