Hello Idoink,
According to an article published by Automotive Body Repair News (
ABRN ) a monthly trade publication serving the collision repair
industry there are approximately 9 million auto insurance claims
annually.
Relevant Excerpt:
?CIC?s Information Technology Committee organized the panel after
conducting a survey of shop owners at CIC earlier this year. Cindy
Schnier, co-chairman of the committee, said that while the sample size
was small, the study found that on average, shops have to rekey data
from printed insurer estimates into their own estimating systems for
about 28 percent of their jobs. Schnier said that equates to about
2.52 million of the approximately 9 million auto insurance claims
annually.?

You will need to find a another source to confirm this. I was
thinking the source would be a report rather than a comment.
The 9 Million figure is useful however I can readily find other
comments that contradict it.
There are 235 million motor vehicles registered in the USA and the US
Department of Transportation estimates that the typical driver will
have a near automobile accident one to two times per month and all
will be in a collision of some type on average of every 6 years.
This places the number of accidents at around 40 million per annum

Putting It In Perspective
About 10 percent of collision claims in the United States result in
the cars being totalled, according to Larry Costin at CCC Information
Services, a company that tracks auto claims for the insurance
industry. There are approximately 20 million accidents each year, and
approximately 2 million total losses.
As another example, State Farm insures about 37 million cars. It
estimates that it totals about 500,000 cars a year in auto claims

Perhaps this tidbit of information might be helpful.
From J.D. Power and Associates 2001 Homeowners Insurance Study:
?Only 18 percent of consumers report that they filed a claim against
their homeowners insurance policy in the last three years, compared to
nearly 35 percent of those who filed a claim against their auto
insurance policy during the same period.?
