Question ID: 433912
How many passengers are carried by European airlines each year?
Who are the top 20 European airlines and how many passengers do they carry each?
How many bags do they lose or mishandle each year? By mishandle this
means any bag which is lost, delayed, has an item stolen from it or is
damaged?

Hi!

a.) When you say top 20 airlines are you talking about ranking them in
terms of profit?

b.) I was able to find an airline association that lists 30 european
airlines including the big ones and has net profit data that we can
rank. But I I cannot be sure that all the big airlines are there.
However, that association has data on missing baggages. However, this
data is only for missing ones and not for delays or damages.

Would the data in letter "b" suffice in case I cannot find data on "a"?

Thanks!

Note:

The missing baggage numbers are on a per airline basis. I cannot find
something for the industry as a whole.

Is this ok as well?

Thanks!

No, I am only interested in passengers carried (pax)

I have seen sight of a report that has information on baggage
mishandled based on the numbers of bags per 1000 pax carried so assume
it exists.

Thanks. The mishandled information you saw is probably the same I saw
and it states only missing luggage "per 1000 pax".

Will this be good enough if we find information on letter "a"?

Thanks.

Hi again!

After doing some additional research, I found the following:

a. I found data for passenger numbers for 80 to 90+ airlines in
Europe. I can extract the top 20 from there.

b. Again, I think we saw the same data for missing luggage "per 1000 pax".

c. The problem is that the missing baggage per 1000 per pax, isn't
available for all the airlines in the top 20.

Knowing this, can I replace those with no missing baggage data with
the ones that have such numbers?

c. I did not find a total for the missing baggage data for Europe.

Would these findings be ok with you?

Thanks!

idoink-ga,

According to the 2005 annual report of the Association of European Airlines:

http://www.aea.be/aeawebsite/datafiles/yearbook05.pdf
Association of European Airlines

their member companies carried 307 million passengers in 2004, an
increase of 4.9% over 2003 numbers:

==========

...Overall, total scheduled passenger numbers increased 4.9% to 307 million.

...Largest increases were in the regions which suffered the greatest
downturn in 2003; North Africa and Middle East traffic grew by about
20% and the much more substantial Far Eastern market was close behind,
with a plus 18.9%.

The "Key Statistics" table on page 56 of the report provides a good
deal of additional statistics on the combined air traffic among
European airlines.

==========

The top airlines (those carrying a million passengers or more) were:

Lufthansa	48,255,400

Air France	45,368,900

British Airways	35,462,500

Iberia	25,802,700

Alitalia	21,988,400

KLM	20,386,200

SAS	20,378,600

Turkish Airlines	11,376,600

SWISS	9,279,100

Austrian	7,619,100

bmi	6,892,500

TAP Portugal	6,048,200

Finnair	6,028,100

Olympic Airlines	5,794,400

Spanair	5,644,400

Virgin Atlantic	4,328,600

CSA	3,994,800

Meridiana	3,597,100

LOT	3,493,100

SN Brussels Airlines	3,192,700

Malev	2,546,200

Cyprus Airways	1,702,300

Air Malta	1,365,200

Icelandair	1,360,700

Croatia Airlines	1,347,900

Jat Airways	1,076,800

TAROM	1,061,700

===============

AEA has also, in recent years, begun providing statistics on baggage
handling. Most, but not all, of their member companies participate in
the statistics program.

You can access the AEA statistics by registering (for free) at their
Consumer Information site:

http://www.aea.be/AEAWebsite/Presentation_Tier/Pr_Registration_form.aspx?MenuItem=rootMenu425

after which, you can access the Consumer Information page and see the
baggage (as well as punctuality) statistics for the participating
European airlines.

For 2005, the numbers reveal a total of 3,691,045 bags that were
"delayed upon arrival", as the AEA puts it.

These appear to be bags that were lost or delayed, though the numbers
do not necessarily include baggage that was damaged, but nonethess
arrived on time.

Among the participating airlines, this resulted in an average of 14.0
missing or delayed bags per 1,000 passengers.
