idoink-ga,
According to the 2005 annual report of the Association of European Airlines:
http://www.aea.be/aeawebsite/datafiles/yearbook05.pdf
Association of European Airlines
their member companies carried 307 million passengers in 2004, an
increase of 4.9% over 2003 numbers:
==========
...Overall, total scheduled passenger numbers increased 4.9% to 307 million.
...Largest increases were in the regions which suffered the greatest
downturn in 2003; North Africa and Middle East traffic grew by about
20% and the much more substantial Far Eastern market was close behind,
with a plus 18.9%.
The "Key Statistics" table on page 56 of the report provides a good
deal of additional statistics on the combined air traffic among
European airlines.

AEA has also, in recent years, begun providing statistics on baggage
handling. Most, but not all, of their member companies participate in
the statistics program.
You can access the AEA statistics by registering (for free) at their
Consumer Information site:
http://www.aea.be/AEAWebsite/Presentation_Tier/Pr_Registration_form.aspx?MenuItem=rootMenu425
after which, you can access the Consumer Information page and see the
baggage (as well as punctuality) statistics for the participating
European airlines.
For 2005, the numbers reveal a total of 3,691,045 bags that were
"delayed upon arrival", as the AEA puts it.
These appear to be bags that were lost or delayed, though the numbers
do not necessarily include baggage that was damaged, but nonethess
arrived on time.
Among the participating airlines, this resulted in an average of 14.0
missing or delayed bags per 1,000 passengers.
I trust this information fully answers your question.
