Hi,

I have a picture framing business and I would like a listing of 10
reputable sites where it is possible to obtain very high quality
art/photographic work so that I may print and frame these works??

All comments welcome.

Do these need to be royalty-free, or do you plan to
negotiate with the artists and photographers?

Clarification of Question by ivorystraws-ga on 16 Jan 2006 14:24 PST
Yes, these need to be royalty free. I was reading an article in some
newspaper some time ago regarding such online collections of
photograhic/artwork portfolios so as far as I'm aware, they exist but
not exactly sure where to look for them. I'm open to correction
though.

ivorystraws...

Sorry, I should have asked the first time around. Are you
willing to pay for these high-quality images, or are you
hoping to find them at no cost (which seems unlikely)?

Clarification of Question by ivorystraws-ga on 17 Jan 2006 01:52 PST
No, I am not willing to pay for these images but I would pay a nominal
joining fee of some online artworks/photgraphic works gallery.

Let me know what you think.

Hi ivorystraws-ga!

After looking at some websites, it seems that these things are sale on
a per image basis. It's probabaly because the artists worked so hard
on these things so they are selling them just like any ordinary art
work.

Knowing this, would you now be willing to buy art work on a per image basis?

Thanks!

Hi Easterangel,

Thanks for your work and I'm sorry if I haven't been clear with my
question. What I want specifically, is access to high reslution
images, either artwork or photographic work, online.
As stated earlier and in this questions subject line, they must be
roayalty free, I am not willing to pay for these images (on a
per-image or any such basis) but I would pay a nominal joining fee.

I would like a listing of 10 such websites (if 10 exist). After doing
a quick online search, I have already found one such site to prove to
you that such online services exist but I would like a listing of
other such services please.

http://www.stockbyte.com/
"One of the benefits of registration on stockbyte.com is access to
FREE high resolution images for use in projects. At no cost to you
we?re giving you a chance to test drive Stockbyte images. If you?re
satisfied, come back for more."

ivorystraws-ga,

Stockbyte probably isn't the sort of site you want....Have you seen
their free images? Hardly the type of thing to frame and sell.

Your best bet is probably the US goverment. All of the images they
create are copyright-free and available for anyone to use. And some
of the images are absolutely spectacular -- NASA photos of the
universe, National Parks, etc.

Here's an example of a beautiful shot of the Ganges River delta,
available at multiple resoultions, including an extremely hi-rez 27 MB
tiff file:

http://earthasart.gsfc.nasa.gov/ganges.html

If this looks promising, I can certainly provide about 5 or more links
of other government sites with other publicly-available photos.

Let me know what you think,

Hi Pafalafa,

I totally agree that Stockbyte's portfolio of images are hardly the
type of thing to frame and sell, apart from some nature and landscape
images. Although the images you posted from the US goverment are
copyright-free, available for anyone to use and indeed quite nice,
satellite images etc are not the type of work which I would like to
frame.

I wonder if Google Earth or Maps could provide better if I required
that type of work??

Thanks for your posting anyway.

Hi ivorystraws-ga!

I think the big problem here is finding very high quality photos for
the web. In cases like these usually you need to pay on a per image
basis or get a subscription.

By the way can you give us a budget for this project of yours?

Next I found this website wherein you can get photos free and
royalty-free. Is this on the right track?

http://www.morguefile.com/

Thanks!

>>...satellite images etc are not the type of work which I would like to
frame...<<

How about giving us a hint!

What type of images *would* you like to frame? The NASA pix are a lot
more handsome than the free stockbyte images, which you seemed to
think was a usable site for your needs.

Unless you can give us a bit more guidance, I doubt we'll be able to assist you.

It's advisable to check the FAQs, Terms of Service, and
User Agreement of prospective sites. Morguefile limits
the use of images as follows:

"...selling prints, selling the images directly or claiming
the photo is yours is prohibited."

Yes, the NASA pix are a lot more handsome than the free stockbyte
images but you're hardly going to hang it in your living room...
they're not exactly a best seller. Photographic images/artwork of
landscapes, abstract images/artwork, Classical, Reproductions,
Drawings etc is what I'm looking for, basically anything that a
gallery would have but it doesn't have to be expensive, famous,
complicated or well-known gallerywork.... just a creative collectiion
of work.

If there is no such service as I've outlined out there, then maybe
there are alternatives such as blogs where high-resolution digital
images are uploaded freely and can be downloaded etc. Interestingly,
good search terms results in some really nice freely available artwork
on google images!

Clarification of Question by ivorystraws-ga on 17 Jan 2006 10:14 PST
Wow, I've never had such interest or response to any google question
ever! Thanks to all who've posted.

I guess there's no real straightforward answer. I like some of the
illustrations and fine art at morguefile but since the image is
"copyrighted material and cannot be copied or reproduced" and as
sublime pointed out, "...selling prints, selling the images directly
or claiming the photo is yours is prohibited.", seems not to be the
answer hmmmm....

See if this site comes any closer:

unmodified, standalone or combined with another product
without prior written (email) consent from us."

No, not really what I'm looking for, it's a similar portfolio as
stockbyte and the works are more related for business use as for
personal admiration.

Thanks for your contribution anyway.

I don't know how <ahem> unusual your tastes run, but there are some
beautiful high-resolution images here:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/dreamanatomy/da_dream.html

and many of them are public domain.

Here are two of my favorites:

Persian manuscript, ca. 1400-1500

Rock painting, ca. 6000 B.C.E.

Hello ivorystraws-ga,

I'm still not clear on what types of images would meet your needs.
I've located a website with dozens of sources that you could choose
from. There is an incredible range of subjects and styles represented
here. Will this be satisfactory?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_image_resources
Wikipedia:Public domain image resources

I look forward to your clarification.

Excellent link CZH, that's exactly the kind of resource I'm looking
for so as long as most of them images/artwork is printable and
reproduceable (which on going through a small few of them, seem to
be). Thanks for your help, I was beginning to think that such a
resource did not exist!

Clarification of Question by ivorystraws-ga on 26 Jan 2006 02:26 PST
Thanks also to pafalafa for the links you sent on, they're definitely
very interesting and different but perhaps not the nieche market I'm
looking to get into... thanks anyway.

Hello again ivorystraws-ga,

I'm glad you liked the links offered by the website I've found. You
said, "... that's exactly the kind of resource I'm looking for ..."
and you verified that the images/artwork were suitable.

Can I post this as the official answer? Thanks.

Hello ivorystraws-ga,

As many of us have discovered, the United States government offers a
treasure trove of public domain resources. Wikipedia has collected and
categorized public domain image resources from mostly government
agency resources that will help you with finding reproducible art and
photographs on a wide range of subjects.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain_image_resources
Wikipedia:Public domain image resources

I'm glad that these resources will help meet your needs.

Best wishes for the success of your framing business.

Excellent thinking outside of the box on this one to eventually
deliver exactly the resource I was looking for. Love this service and
would definitely use it again!!

IvoryStraws,

I'm afraid that you have misinterpreted StockByte's marketing blurb.
They may give a few sample images for free, but they do charge for use
of their images.

Hi Hammer,

Actually, yes they do charge for specific CD's from specific
categories as I registered there a while ago to have a look. They're
images are not for me either apart from some nice landscape images
which they have but rather expensive at ?399 for 100 images on CD.
