I am looking for the above files that I could download and use in a
mapping application I'm trying to write....... need open source, free
data...

You can download NASA Landsat7 images from 2000 for free from
https://zulu.ssc.nasa.gov/mrsid/mrsid.pl
These are in MrSID format and need to be converted to jp2000
This can be done with LizardTech's GeoExpress 5.0

I am sure you recognise that the size of the files involved is enormous.

Additionally there is a sample atlas of Afghanistan abstracted from
similarly available data, apparently available free from
