To become a professor, you need a PhD. This will require, first, a
bachelor's degree in any discipline, followed by entry to a graduate
school offering a PhD in History, which typically takes 5 to 8 years
to complete. There are no professional examinations beyond those
administered by the degree-granting institution. Today, an assistant
professor in the humanities is usually offered a salary between
$50,000 and $80,000 to start, depending on the applicant's academic
record and the hiring university's financial resources.
