I'm a writer interesting in tracking sales figures on my book. I wrote
to Nielsen BookScan to see if they have a program where an author can
pay them just to receive results on his title(s). I never heard back
from them - can you help me find out if this service is available?
Thanks, Orland Outland |

Hi Orland,
I received a response from the VP Sales and Service of Nielsen
BookScan, asking me for the name of the writer who is inquiring about
this service. Do you mind, if I gave them your name?
Waiting to hear from you.
Best regards,

Hi Orland,
This is his response:
"Cannot the author just get his sales and royalty information direct
from him publisher?"

That's a surprising answer from Nielsen, who ought to know better...
The problem is, even the best publishers issue royalty statements for
a six month period, and that is issued some months after the period
ends. (The worst publishers I've had have made me wait a year and a
half for a statement, so they could keep the royalties and earn
interest on them.) I had a new book come out in October, and I was
hoping not to have to wait until summer of next year to see how it's
doing now. Even if the publisher subscribes to BookScan, it is not in
their best interest to let the author know how well his book is doing,
especially if for instance they're negotiating a contract on the next
book. I would assume Nielsen would be delighted to make additional
revenues from vain and anxious authors as well as their publishers :).
