If it is legal to do so,I would like to know which bank is handling
the estate of Penny Amrose of 7442 Spring Village Drive in Springfield
Virginia. Ms. Ambrose died a few months ago, having no family.
I want to ask them when they are releasing Ms. Ambrose's
apartment as I am interested in leasing it. If this is illegal, then I
do not want to do it, but I thought certain things were available for
public view.

I don't quite understand.

If Ms. Ambrose lived in an apartment, presumably the rent is no longer
being paid. Have you checked with the building's landlord as to the
status of the apartment?

I've located Ms. Ambrose's full legal name, so it's certainly possible
to continue researching this. But I just wanted to check to make sure
you've done first things first.

Let me know what the landlord had to say.

It is not a rental. It is a retirement community where the residents
"lease" their apartments and the money is returned to them, or their
estates, when they die. The apartment must be released by the family
or whoever is handling the estate. Ms. Ambrose has been dead some time
now but the bank is, for some reason, not releasing the unit. Nothing
can be done until that happens. I guess I thought I could ask them
when they plan to release it. Maybe this is not "kosher," but I want
that two bedroom apartment. I have been waiting a long time for one.
Please proceed if you agree with this explanation. Thank you.

I agree that you should cut to the chase and simply ask the landlord
if you can get on a waiting list.

As far as I know it is perfectly OK for us to do this sort report but
I will, of course, leave it to pafalafa to answer.

You can go to the probate court in the county where Ms. Ambrose lived
and ask to see the file. Often you can also access the information
online as most clerks of court have websites. The information is
public knowledge and it is perfectly ok to inquire. If there is an
attorney on the case i recommend you contact him. Often these things
just get mucked up and it takes a while to sort through them. Also
people are funny about death and they dislike dealing with the
business that comes along with an estate. Often it is a relief to
find someone willing to take over real estate or help settle some
stuff that needs to be done.
