What does "assalamualaikum" mean? The word appears to be spelled differently on different searches I have done (asalamalakum, assalamulakum, etc..). It seems to be some sort of greeting based in Islam. If the word does not have a specific definition a brief history would be appreciated. |

Keith, The phrase you asked about is one of the most common Arabic greetings, and means "Peace be with you". It is quite similar to the Hebrew phrase, sholom aleichem. You can read a good deal more about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assalamu_Alaikum and you're quite right, the spelling is very varied in English, and sometimes appears as salam alaikum: http://www.geocities.com/daarulnaeem/Salam.html I trust that's what you needed, but if there's anything else I can do for you, just let me know by posting a Request for Clarification. Peace be with you, pafalafa-ga search strategy -- Google search on [ salam ] |
