I am converting my '95 cherokee to an off road vehicle. I plan to
perform 5 major upgrades in this process:
1. lockers - ARB airless front & rear
2. Dana 44 rear to handle off roading (already bought one off an '88 xj)
3. larger tires
4. taller gears (4.11 or +)
5. lift to handle larger tires
In my opinion, there are 2 factors in off roading which provide the
largest increase in performance. These factors are Traction & Ground
Clearance.
I can get max traction with aggressive tread tires & lockers all around.
My question is centered around item 5. I want to be able to drive my
cherokee to the off roading destination. Therefore, I need it to be
street legal. Furthermore, I want it to also be as 'safe' as possible
while traveleing to the off road parks. I will not be using my
cherokee as a daily driver. However, I'd like to be able to drive 3
or 4 hrs to get to the off road park without fearing to drive over 45
mph.
However, when it comes to ground clearance, I'm not sure how to proceed.
The higher a vehicle is lifted, the less stable at highway speeds it becomes.
Normal 33 inch diamater or greater tires are 12.5 " or greater in diameter.
Here is my magic question:
What is the lowest lift that will allow me to run 33+ inch tires?
More specifically, will buying more narrow tires allow me to run with
a shorter lift?
Even more specifically, what is the minimum lift which will allow me
to run the following tires? Please keep in mind that I am willing to
trim the body of my cherokee significantly.
