I would like as much academic research as possible from around the
world on Generation Y. Generation Y refers to global citizens born
between 1978 and 1994. I am not interested in anecdotal media. It
needs to be "hard". Research from consulting organisations and even
recruitment companies may also be OK. Other names from Generation Y
include Millennials, Echo Boomers, .com generation and you may find
others. There will also be differences in how they define them. A
start date from as early as 76 will be ok, or as late as 82.

I am particulalry interested in information regarding their buying
patterns, and behaviour in the buying process.

Dear Peter,

Here are numerous articles/books on the subject. It should be noted
that the definition changes, and some devide the generation into two:
Yers/Nexus (born in the late 1970s and early 1980s) and
Millenials/Echoers (born since the mid 1980s). It should be noted,
that few magazine articles are featured here, but only if they are of
importance (for example Business Week's cover article on "Generation
Y").

Politicalguru has given you lots of excellent data . . . here's one
additional lead from today's New York Times Business section.
(http://www.nytimes.com -- it's free for a week, then you'll have to
pay to read it):

It's an article called: A GENERATION SERVES NOTICE: IT'S A MOVING
TARGET by Tom Zeller, Jr.
NY Times, Sunday, January 22, 2006
The blurb: Many people in their 20's are abandoning traditional media
channels, posing a challenge to marketers trying to reach them.

Snippet:
"The eldest of the millennials, as those born between 1980 and 2000
are sometimes called, are now in their early to mid-20's. By 2010,
they will outnumber both baby boomers and Gen-X'ers among those 18 to
49 - the crucial consumers for all kinds of businesses, from
automakers and clothing companies to Hollywood, record labels and the
news media.

The number of vehicles through which young people find entertainment
and information (and one another) makes them a moving target for
anyone hoping to capture their attention. "

The article then goes into detail on those "vehicles" and the
millennial's buying patterns and behavior. Includes interviews with
millennials all over the U.S.
