I have a Hewlett Packard Pavilion Millenium edition personal computer. I would like to know if I can burn data onto a blank disc with it. I want to include on the disc a search engine so that I can retrieve data by putting the disc in my computer and entering a word or a phrase in the search engine. If this is possible please send me a detailed explanation of the process for doing it. In setting forth the process please remember that I am not computer literate and know only a few of the technical terms. For instance below I am entering in the question category section the word "software" although I am not sure of the difference between software and hardware. If it is not possible to burn a cd on my computer please tell me where I can have a data cd made with a searc engine that I can enter into my computer and retrieve the information. |

didom-ga: The researchers (I am not an official one) will need some additional information to answer your question. 1. Does your PC have a CD Writer (or burner) or just a CD Reader? If you don't know, can you provide the exact model number of your HP PC (it should be on a the logo in front of the PC, or on a label on the back of the PC that says "model number" or something similar). 2. If you have a CD Writer, what software is installed on your PC to write the CD (Roxio, Nero, NTI, ... with version number, if any). 3. What type of files will you be putting on the CD (Word, PowerPoint, any other type of data)? |

You might be able to determine if you have a burner if you look on the burner itself. On the front of most burners, it will say Rewrite or Rewriteable Disc in tiny letters. Also, talljew's comment about doing a Control + F (or right click the drive/folder, and select "search" or "find") is an easy way to have your "search engine." The older Windows Operativng Systems allow you to search only the filename. In Windows 2000 and XP (not sure about Windows ME [Millenim Edition]), you can even search the contents of the files depending on the file formats. I would imagine that they would be able to search inside the MS Word documents. As a test, you can do this search on your C: drive (or any folder or subfolder) and see if you like the results of this "search engine." One final thing you'll need are blank CDs. :) Alternatively, you could send all the files to a friend who does have a burner and have him/her burn them onto a CD. If you have files that take up a large amount of space (5+ megs), it could take a very long time over a dial up connection. For 5 megs, it would probably take an hour on dial up. Yet another solution would be to have a friend with a laptop with a burner come over to your place to burn the files. You would have to find a way to transfer the files to the laptop though (usb, ethernet, serial connection, token ring...). |

didom-ga: Hewlett Packed Pavilion Model 6745C is good information to answer this question. According to http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&lang=en&cc=us&product=58147&dlc=en&docname=bph05963#N1078C it comes with a CD writer (CD-RW drive) and Easy CD Creator by Adaptec to write CDs. I'd recommend using a blank CD-R disk to do the writing (CD-RW disks should also work, but some older computer had problems reading CD-RW disks written by other computers). To write data files into the CD, see http://support.gateway.com/support/faq/c-drives/adaptec/CDCreator5/data_cd.htm or http://www.lecom.edu/staff/cd.htm (or search on google for "using easy CD creator" without quotes). You can select your MS-Word files and record them to the CD this way. For searching, you can use the WindowsME search feature (Start-Search), or even better, get the Google Desktop (read details at http://desktop.google.com/about.html and download from http://desktop.google.com/ and install it on your PC if you think it suits your needs). Good luck. -- I am not an official GA researcher. |

After posting the comment, I discovered from http://desktop.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12320&query=CD+drive&topic=0&type=f that google desktop curently does not search CDs or external drives. So if WindowsME search is not sufficient, you can get tools with additional features by searching (!) google for "searching file on a CD" (or similar phrase, no quotes). |
