Or you looking only for an online translation of the poem, or would
locating it in a published volume be sufficient, along with
information on how to purchase the book?

iulius --

I am certain that the poem you are seeking is titled "Charles Zero's
Life" in the English translation by Robin Skelton. That translation
is contained in a volume of George Faludy's poetry called "George
Faludy: Selected Poems, 1933-80." The book was published in paperback
and hardback versions by the University of Georgia Press (Athens, GA,
1985). It was also published in 1985 for Canadian distribution by
McLellan & Stewart.

The translation is copyright-protected, so I cannot reproduce much of
the poem here. In order to reassure you that this is indeed the poem
you are seeking, here are a few lines from the beginning and the end
of the 146-line poem, which was written in 1935:

Charles Zero's Life:
From stanza 1:
"A plaster mask of Voltaire on his wall and a bronze bust of Bismarck on the table
(the discrepancy never bothered him because he scarcely ever looked at them)
. . . . . .

I will write a story of my life."

From the final stanza:

"The top sheet spelt 'My Life' in confidence
followed by a period, but no sentence, no word, and not one letter followed
after . . . :

Charles Zero, this is the story of your life."

The book appears to be out of print, but many copies of it are
available from a variety of online sellers of used books for prices as
low as $4.46 (plus shipping). Here is a link to that lowest price
offer from a highly rated seller on the Amazon.com site:

In the hardback version, the book is available from many sellers for
prices mainly between $20 and $30. Here are links to several lists of
them gleaned from the Amazon.com and Bookfinder.com websites:

Finally, the book may well be available for perusing at a University
library near you or for borrowing from a public library convenient to
you.

Search Strategy:

I first conducted Google searches using the English and Hungarian
spellings of Faludy's name. These searches, as well as a name search
on the Amazon.com site led to lists of books authored by Faludy.

The "Selected Poems" compilation seemed like the best candidate for a
volume that would contain the poem you are seeking. So, I conducted
Google searches on the name of the book, which did not turn up
information on its contents.

I then searched the catalogues of libraries that are convenient to me,
and I found it in a public library system and in the library of a
nearby university. I then checked the stacks of the university
library and obtained the above information.

As noted above, I am confident that this is book contains the poem you
are seeking, and I was happy to have been able to find it for you. If
anything is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the
answer.
