George Allen, football coach for the Washintgon Redskins, has been
informally credited (by people on the internet) with writing a piece
called: What Is A Workout? George Allen is now dead. He has a son
who is a U.S. Congressman (if that helps.) George was also the chair
of the Preident's Council on Phsical Fitness and Sport (1981-88). I
will give you the first and last few sentences of the piece, and you
should be able to find it yourself in its entirety on the web.

A workout is 25 percent perspiration and 75 percent determination.
Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts
self-discipline. Doing it is easy once you get started. A workout
makes you better today than you were yesterday. It strengthens the
body, relaxes the mind, and toughens the spirit. When you work out
regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows..........

I need to verify if George Allen acutally did write this, and, to find
when (month/year, day if possible) and where (what publication) it
first appeared in.

jtaylor474-ga,

I found a source that give a direct source for this quote -- a
publication (a poster) prepared by the President's Council on Physical
Fitness in 1983, during the time that George Allen was at the helm of
that organization.

In fact, the source says:

"The former Chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness
and Sports, the late George Allen, created a poster entitled "What is
a Workout?" that captures the essence of the uniqueness and value of
the physical domain.."

The source includes the cite for the document. Unfortunately, though,
it only reproduces the text (which you already have) but does not show
an image of the actual poster itself.

I checked several library catalogs, but did not see any (including the
Library of Congress) that included the poster in their collections.

Would information about the source of the cite be a suitable answer to
your question?

Let me know.

Let me take another crack at that first paragraph, as it was kind of ambiguous:

I found a book that gives a direct source for this quote, and
attributes it to a publication (a poster) prepared by the President's
Council on Physical
Fitness in 1983, during the time that George Allen was at the helm of
that organization...

Hope that's clearer.

jtaylor474-ga,

It wasn't easy, but I've found two solid references for this work.

The first one attributes it to the President's Council on Physical
Fitness and Sports at the time when George Allen headed up that group.
A second reference, in slightly revised form, attributes the
authorship directly to George Allen.

Several links to the relevant works can be seen here:

http://esnips.com/web/GoogleAnswers

in the three files that begin with [ George Allen ]:

[ George Allen quote cited.jpg ] is an excerpt from the book:

Helping At-Risk Youth Through Physical Fitness Programming
Thomas R. Collingwood
May, 1997
Human Kinetics Publishers

You can see that the book refers to a poster created by George Allen,
and give a reference number (35) for the work. The reference itself
is shown in another file on the esnips page -- [ george allen
reference 35.jpg ] -- and it gives the full reference as:

35. President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. 1983. "What
is a workout?" Washington, DC: Government Printing Office.

A second version of the inspirational text appears in slightly
modified form directly under George Allen's byline as author. It is
called "What is Exercise", and can be seen in the file [ George Allen
Heartcorps.jpg ] (click on the "Original Size" button at the top of
the page to see it clearly).

The reference here is given as:

What is exercise? George W. Allen. Heartcorps. Jan-Feb 1989, v1 n4 p26(1).

Heartcorps was a magazine publication that appears to no longer be in print.

search strategy -- searched Google, a9.com, shop.ebrary.com, and
several subscription databases for excerpts from the quote, including:

[ "what is a workout" ]

[ "one part physical exertion" ]

I really need to get an image of the original poster cited below. Any
possibility of this?

is a workout?" Washington, DC: Government Printing Office.

As well, if there is a company that will search for an old poster for
you, that would be great too. Have look online and found nothing like
that.
