Hello Shlezin,

There are an estimated 1.5 to 2 million homeschoolers in the United States.

Below you will find the resources drawn on for this data.

?Q. How many homeschoolers are there?

A. Nobody really knows. Several government agencies and homeschooling
organizations have made educated guesses, but because not all states
count homeschoolers, and because homeschools in some states are
indistinguishable from other private schools, there are no hard
numbers. Researchers currently estimate that there are 1.5 to 2
million homeschoolers in the U.S., representing 3 to 4 percent of the
school age population.?

An article in the Coalition of Independent Homeschoolers estimates
that there are 2 million homeschoolers in the U.S.

?For over 20 years, the organization known as the Home School Legal
Defense Association has purported to speak for homeschoolers
throughout the United States. In fact, HSLDA, is a religiously
conservative, contractual law firm that represents, by its own
admission, fewer than 90,000 home educators -- less than 5% of the
country?s estimated 2 million homeschoolers.?

?The U.S. Department of Education (Institute of Education Sciences;
NCES) released in August a report dated July 2004 entitled ?1.1
Million Homeschooled Students in the United States in 2003? (by
Princiotta, Bielick, & Chapman) in which the authors estimate the
number of homeschooled students in the United States (i.e., homeschool
population size). Dr. Ray, however, still estimates that there were
1.7 to 2.1 million K-12 homeschool students in the US during the
2002-2003 year Consistent with Dr. Ray?s findings (see Worldwide Guide
to Homeschooling), the researchers found that homeschooling has grown
about 7% per year during the past 4 years.?

Home Schooling

In 2004, the National Center for Education Statistics estimated that
in spring 2003, the most recent period for which data is available,
there were about 1.1 million homeschooled children, compared to
850,000 in spring

Facts on homeschooling from the National Home Education Research Institute:

?There were an estimated 1,700,000 to 2,100,000 children (grades K-12)
home educated during 2002-2003 in the United States. Homeschooling
appears to still be the fastest-growing form of education.?
