Hello Joho123,

There are a number of "community projects" based on Wiki software as described at
  http://wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WelcomeVisitors
Unfortunately, the wiki.org site has not been updated for some time
and the list of "sites" is EXTREMELY brief.

There is however a good reference on Wikipedia itself at
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki
which points you to
http://www.usemod.com/cgi-bin/mb.pl?BiggestWiki#Biggest_wikis_by_page_count_on_July_3_2004
which has the "biggest" Wiki list or
  http://www.worldwidewiki.net/wiki/SwitchWiki
which has a huge index of Wiki's or
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_wiki
which is an intermediate list of wiki sites that encourage browsing.

You may also want to check out
  http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Our_projects
which lists the projects that are sponsored by the Wikimedia
Foundation. These tend to be larger community based projects.

Another source of references would be the Google Directory at
  http://directory.google.com/
I suggest searching with a phrase such as
  wiki (your area of interest)
or go to a more specific category such as
  http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Groupware/Wiki/
which is the top level of a set of pages that describe Wiki based
groupware and sites that use it.

If any part of this answer is unclear or you need a more specific
reference, please request a clarification.

Most of the links are wikis that a working on a programming things or
special topics. Is there not a wiki with a general topic and big too,
exept wikipedia?

Hello Joho123,

Hmm. I am not quite sure what kind of site you would be interested in,
you ask about general topics, but that can mean different things to
different people. From what I have seen, most entries put into a Wiki
(or into more than one Wiki) are done by people that are passionate
about something (a product, a location, a point of view). That you
find most of the Wiki's based on software development (or programming)
and other special topics appears to fit that mold.

What are YOU interested and can contribute to? For example, if you are
interested in travel, you can search (as I suggested previously) using
something like:
(search phrase is travel wiki)

Yes, you are likely to get a link to Wikipedia [since it IS basically
an encyclopedia - covering a wide range of topics], but there are
other (usually much smaller) Wiki's that are willing to accept
participants.

SETI@home is similar in that you work with others for a common goal,
but are you looking for things like this as well, where you just
donate processor time, or do you just want hands-on sorts of projects?

Another use for collaborative working over the Internet is the
translation of open source software. The project for Welsh is Kyfiethu
http://www.kyfieithu.co.uk/index.php?lg=en&

and it uses the Kartouche web-based translation management tool
http://www.dotmon.com/kartouche/
