I have two computers running Win XP home. The smaller one is about to
lose the hard drive. I want to transfer the stuff over to the other
machine that has a raid array so I never go through this again. I have
stuff on the raid computer that I would like to keep.
Do I have to lose the data on the raid machine to "image" the other
onto it... or can I move the junk from the old to new without losing
what's on the new? |

Hi,
What tool or how are you planning on using to "image" your data?
Thanks.

I don't know. Norton Ghost or maybe xxclone? They are on a home
network... but they don't seem to see each other. Most of the stuff
I've read seems to reference "drive to drive" Transfers and not so
much "system to system" transfers. I don't know what cabling I need...
I don't know how to do it.

Hi,
The easiest and fastest way would be to put the harddrive from the old
computer into the new computer and copy the files over. However, I'm
gathering that you might not be confident about doing this.
You can use Ghost over a network, but I believe that doesn't come with
the basic version.
Otherwise you can share a folder on the raid machine and copy over the
files to there.
Or you could copy over the files using DVDRs or CDRs. Do you have a
DVD or CD writer in the old machine?
Thanks.

Well... I do have a CDRW ...I'm just goiing to have to figure out how
to get email folders and password cookies on the CD. The new machine
has 2 80GB SATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration and you are
correct.... I'm not cool enough to get an ATA Drive added to the mix.
It looks like I need to have similar drives to use Ghost... and it
seems like I'll lose what's on the New Drives as well if I try to
image.

Hi,
I can help you copy over your emails. What email client are you using?
Would you be happy for me to post that as an answer?
Thanks.
