I know how to cut a basic bob hairstyle, but I was wondering; how do
you cut a shattered bob? I am pretty certain that it involves a
feather razor, but beyond that I am lost. I have scoured the Internet
and I can't find any sort of tutorial. I have located one video, but
it was rather expensive. Please note that I would prefer free or
inexpensive directions.

That doesn't provide instructions for how to create the haircut. That
is what I asked for.

"The style - call it chunky, choppy, piecey or shattered - is catching
on in metro, as local gals flock to their hairdressers seeking the new
look sported by Ryan, Calista Flockhart, Reese Witherspoon, Halle
Berry, Courtney Thorne Smith..."

[edit]

"It's fun without being too short or too boyish. It's fun and
feminine," says Dillman, who cuts the hair in layers, then wisps and
texturizes the ends before the "piece" cutting starts.

The cut can be worn messy, styled with a paddle brush or one that's
thick and round - a straightener or flat iron will take it to another
extreme. After the hair is dry, gooey gel or wax is applied for that
"unwashed" and "separated" look.

"The hair has no volume, except at the ends,"

[edit]

"Metro stylist Ian Marc has coined the term "shattered" to describe
the increasingly popular cut. He employs a combination of point
cutting and deep freehand cuts - and often snips clients' hair while
it's dry - to achieve the look."

"In general, shattered styles are created around the bottom edges of a
shorter style like a bob or shag with a razor or scissors. The
hairdresser slices or cuts into the bottom fringe of the style to
create uneven edges.

The usual goal of a shattered style is to create texture and movement.
Styles can be lightly or heavily shattered depending on the desired
style. Although shattered edges can be created on most shorter
styles, they can be very flattering on hair that tends to fall flat or
is overly fine. Shattered styles are classic designs that never seem
to completely go out of style.

Shattered edges offer a lot of styling flexibility when combined with
a volumizing cream or spray and a little wax or pomade swiped through
the ends."

"In this classic bob style with light flicks, hair is precision cut
dry with tons of shattered multi-length layers to create a circular
head-hugging fringe effect for extreme movement, softness and shine.

A messy zig zagged side part directs the hair into a soft side swept
fringy veil."

"They're still the hottest trend in years! Instead of asking for blunt
ends, get them chipped, razored, shattered or chopped into irregular
lengths."

"If you?re planning to use the same shears to cut a shattered bob you
would to cut a precision bob, think again. ?The right tool is
essential to the outcome,? says Bonnie Megowan, president of Bonika
Shears, Atlanta. ?If you want a nice clean line, you should choose a
shear with more handle than blade. A longer blade would move through
the hair too fast, but a longer handle could give you more power at
the tips of the blade so you could cut through even the thickest hair
and get a clean straight line.? They don?t call Megowan the ?scissor
mechanic? for nothing."
