Anomie from the Durkheim Archive http://durkheim.itgo.com/anomie.html Durkheim identifies two major causes of anomie: the division of labor, and rapid social change. Both of these are, of course, associated with modernity. In the literature the focus tends to be on rapid change experienced by individuals either up or down the social structure. Here let us focus again on the division of labor. The individual in modern society is confronted with a variety of groups that have different values and goals, each of which competes for the individual's allegiance. http://www.faculty.rsu.edu/~felwell/Theorists/Durkheim/ anomie as adopted and adapted by Robert K Merton http://www.crimetheory.com/Merton/ http://www.mdx.ac.uk/www/study/xmer.htm#p131 http://www.mdx.ac.uk/www/study/xmer.htm#p157 etc discussion http://www.iejs.com/Criminology/anomie_and_strain_theory.htm http://www.iuscrim.mpg.de/forsch/krim/ortmann1_e.html http://www.criminology.fsu.edu/crimtheory/merton.htm there is a discussion of cultural change and psychiatric disorders including Durkheim's theory and anomie here http://www.mentalhealth.com/mag1/wolfgang.html |
