Hello. Abraham Lincoln's great-great-great-great-grandfather, Samuel Lincoln, came from England. Thus, his heritage was English. From the National Archives: "ABRAHAM LINCOLN 16th U.S. President 1861-1865 LIFETIME: 1809-1865, of English ancestry " http://hoover.archives.gov/exhibits/cottages/humble/lincoln.html Here's an interesting article about the area of England from which Abraham Lincoln's ancestors came: "English church reaches out to Lincoln land" http://showcase.netins.net/web/creative/lincoln/news/church.htm Here are some family trees for Abraham Lincoln: "Ancestors of Abraham Lincoln" http://www.genbox.com/reports/webs/Pedc101.htm "Lincoln Family" http://www.greymoorco.com/Genealogy/lincoln_history.htm ------- search strategy: "lincoln's ancestors" I hope this helps. |

A person has 64 great-great-great-great-grandparents. So this accounts for 1/64th of his heritage. However, it does account for the lineage of his surname. |

Thank you for your comment, ansel001. This was a $3 question, so an exhaustive review of Lincoln's lineage was likely not expected. A review of one of the sites that I mentioned above indicates that essentially all of Lincoln's other ancestors were English and/or British. "Ancestors of Abraham Lincoln" http://www.genbox.com/reports/webs/Pedc101.htm If you have any information related to significant non-British heritage in Lincoln's family tree, it would be a welcome addition to this thread. |

What is President Abrahan Lincoln heritage or nationality. I.e where in europe does his family come from? According to "The Complete Book of U.S. Presidents" by William A. DeGregorio: "Lincoln was of English ancestry. His great-grandfather Samuel Lincoln emigrated from Norfolk, England, arriving at Higham, Massachussetts, about 1637. Subsequent generations migrated to New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. His paternal grandfather and namesake, Abraham Lincoln, served as a captain in the Virginia militia during the American Revolution. Hearing his friend Daniel Boone talk of cheap land in Kentucky, he moved in 1782 to Jefferson County east of Louisville. Four years later, while working his fields, he was shot and killed by an Indian." |
