My husband is in the Marine Corps, and stationed in Iraq. He was
issued a email address like
this...firstname.lastname@tlab.centaf.af.mil He says I should be
able to access this from our PC at home (here in America). He said
that Microsoft office outlook is the site to go to, and then I'll get
it from there..I've tried so many options and I'm not really computer
literate, but getting better.I have microsoft outlook express and
yahoo, and google and 'explorer' all on my PC. Am I missing something
here? Husband says that Everone that goes home on 'leave', can still
get their emails from home in the states. So...How do I get access to
this email for him (tlab.centaf.af.mil)???

I need to check my emails. I cannot find the 'link' or 'main'page to
this email address. Where do I go to open up my email with the address
of (jane.doe@tlab.centaf.af.mil )?? EXAMPLE: Do I 'log in' to
microsoft office outlook, and click a certain option; and then that
will bring me to the email address?(to open my emails in that address)
or do I need a certain software to get access to that address from my
pc, or do I need to download something for this address to be
accessable? Hope this clarifys the question...

I'm sorry this 'appears' to be a little more difficult a question then i thought..
I have a VAIO(SONY) computer at home (where I retrieve my emails).
The operating system is Windows XP6. I have several email addresses.
For example, one of my email 'web' addresses is a 'yahoo.com' address.
So, to access a 'yahoo.com' email address; I would type in the
internet explorer browser bar WWW.yahoomail.com. Then I could follow
the basic instructions from the yahoo mail page on how to access my
emails. IE. press the envelope icon, then type in user name and
password and then my emails are available. I also have a 'hotmail.com'
email address....to retrieve my hotmail.com emails..I can do this
several ways...I could press the sony bundled documents folder
(located to the left side of my screen)and this will automatically
bring me to the microsoft pages, and then I can find the link to
hotmail.com. Then I just type in my user name and password and I
retrieve my emails...So now , I've explained how to "ACCESS" two
different email web sites or "HOMEPAGES"...CAN YOU PLEASE ASSIST WITH
"ACCESSING" AND/OR RETRIEVING EMAIL FROM A ADDRESS THAT LOOKS
SOMETHING LIKE THIS....JANE.SMITH@TLAB.CENTAF.AF.MIL ???? my
UNDERSTANDING IS THAT...THIS IS NOT A 'PRIVATE' SITE OR OWNED BY THE
MILITARY; AND ANY CIVILIAN OR MILITARY PERSONNEL IS ABLE TO RETRIEVE
THEIR EMAILS FROM ANY 'WINDOWS XP' OPERATING SYSTEM. ONCE AGAIN....MY
QUESTION....WHERE OR HOW DO I RETRIEVE FROM THE INTERNET, AN EMAIL
WITH THE ADDRESS OF SOMETHING LIKE THIS JANE.SMITH@TLAB,CENTAF.AF.MIL
????

Dear Rocky,

Do you know how to write an email in general? Not to your husband?

I'm assuming your husband is referring to Microsoft Outlook, not
Outlook Express. You can access Outlook by either from the system tray
(located at the bottom right hand side of your PC, near where the time
is displayed). The Microsoft Outlook icon looks like an orange clock
set at 3:00. You can also access Outlook by going to Start > Programs
> Microsoft Office > Microsoft Outlook.

If your husband has saved the password, just click "Send/Recieve" on
the top menu. Your email should then download.

Please let me know if this works or if you need further assistance.

Best regards,
Rainbow

Hello rockysmomlv-ga,

Marines almost always access their email via Outlook or another local
email client from the base they are stationed at.

"MY UNDERSTANDING IS THAT...THIS IS NOT A 'PRIVATE' SITE OR OWNED BY THE
MILITARY; AND ANY CIVILIAN OR MILITARY PERSONNEL IS ABLE TO RETRIEVE
THEIR EMAILS FROM ANY 'WINDOWS XP' OPERATING SYSTEM..."

A few things :

1) Marines don't normally use a website (like Yahoo) or gateway page
to access their military email. It's done through the local network.

2) They access their email directly from their base client - i.e.
Outlook, on a base computer.

3) And often - recursive checks and balances are in place to ensure
the request is from a .mil domain or an authorized network.

If other Marines are getting their email at home , then what you need
is the POP server and the SMTP server information from the command, to
plug into your software at home. I've never seen this set up like
that, but I'm not sure how your husbands command is arranged (an Air
Force Luxury? ;-). This is probably the best route :

- Tell him to go to his AISD / 67E ( or S6 ) shop, and explain to them
that he wants you to get his email for him. These guys will tell him
what he needs to tell you.

What you will more than likely end up doing is going to base and
checking it from there, since the 'network' there is authorized to
access the main servers. If that's the case - all you need is his
password, assuming it's not already typed in.

Hope that helps -

SgtCory
