Looking for for a source of small quantity of bitter almonds (Prunus
amygdalus) which are difficult to find in the US. I understand that
they contain certain toxins but these are not for human consumption. I
tried searching but I get thousands of hits to a book with the same
title, "bitter almonds."

Please advise. Thank you.

Just FYI, perhaps the scarcity of availability might be because the
sale of bitter almonds is banned in the US, as are bitter almond
trees.

if you live in the northern climes, try finding someone who has a
Halls Hardy almond tree; they're sold by Raintree Nursery in
Washington State. Legal as far as I know; they are edible, but have a
slightly bitter taste

You can order them online from Germany, or buy them in Sweden and
several other European countries.

http://www.kaffeeroesterei.de/ (Press the link "Nüsse" on the right
side of the page, bitter almonds are called "bittermandeln" in
German.)

Bitter almonds aren't that dangerous, they taste great in almond
cakes, and the cyanide evaporates in the oven when baking. 5-10 seeds
can kill a kid, around 50-60 can kill an adult; but take in to
concideration the taste of the raw almonds, and compare the toxicity
to other dangers. (1 Castorbean can kill a child, 100g flax seeds are
said to be lethal to an adult.)
