Question ID: 43592
I am looking for a TIVO-like PVR system for my Windows XP PC. I have
a 100gig HD, and tons of RAM.

I have a StudioDV card by Pinnacle, which can hook into my coax cable
that has all the channels on it. It even has a video viewing
application that changes channels and comes with an infrared remote.
I also have a Firewire card so I can record DV from my camcorder.

The software can record shows at predetermined times, but lacks the
functionality of a TIVO and the web site (with search engine) of Reply
TV. You can search for “climbing” and it will search future
broadcasts and find content like: all the climbing shows on the
Outdoor life network, as well as an old Everest documentary on PBS.
For example. You put a check next to what you want, and it instructs
the PVR to record them automatically.

I want to have the same functionality with my PC.

I looked into Titan TV.com and found that it works with the following
vendors:

•	AVerTV / AVerTV Stereo / AVerTV Studio
•	El Gato EyeTV – (for Mac only)
•	Hauppauge Win-TV PVR
•	Telemann HiPix DTV-200

Is this is best thing out there?

Will it also work with satellite, as well as cable??

In scanning the Home Theater PC forum at http://www.avsforum.com/
my impression is that TitanTV is simply going to be providing the
television schedule data for use with the PVR software of your choice.
Your card appears to include at least rudimentary PVR software that
would interface with TitanTV. Browsing TitanTV, it appears they have
all conceivable television schedules for the USA and Europe (Cable,
Digital Cable, DSS Satellite).

OK, now here you are about to hit the major road block when using
anything other than Cable. Most of the tuner cards out there only
tune regular TV and Cable signals (some also tune HDTV). So, the PVR
software that talks to your tuner card is not going to be able to tune
a satellite box or Digital Cable. (Unless it offers some sort of
support for an "IR Blaster" that will control other boxes... if so,
count yourself lucky). So you may end up leaving your tuner card on
"Channel 3" or "Aux" and do your tuning through a box.

The nicest looking software appears to be ShowShifter from
http://www.showshifter.com/
it appears to be downloadable for a 30 day trial
(It does not appear to have the "thumbs up/thumbs down" interface
which is a nice feature of Tivo-like devices).

Another piece of software that I have been fascinated with is
SnapStream
http://www.snapstream.com/
and while ShowShifter may have more of the features you want in a
single package, a nice thing about SnapStream is its ability to stream
recorded shows to other devices (even PocketPC) or to computers that
aren't even at your house. May come in handy. However, it does not
appear to be as complete a package as ShowShifter.

The only other software I've seen for this is the GemTV (TV Guide)
software bundled with ATI cards. It does the job, but, it's nothing
that would keep me from buying ShowShifter. It does allow one to
schedule recurring recordings of favorite shows, and it does allow one
to do searches... but, the TitanTV/ShowShifter combination seems
better, frankly.

See what you think of ShowShifter. Unfortunately, I do not see your
particular video card on their compatiability list. (I don't see your
particular video card mentioned very often, sorry.)

Also, you may want to check under Control Panel|Add/Remove Progams and
select Windows Setup. You may see a check box for WebTV for Windows,
which I remember did have a schedule system (I stopped using it
because it didn't have data for my cable company...) Also, while it's
a beautiful schedule interface, it does not offer an interface for
recording. (It was in WindowsME, not sure if they kept it in XP).

There are other web sites that offer television schedules, but, as far
as I have seen, only TitanTV is working with the PVR software
companies to integrate into a point-and-click system that coordinates
with the software on your computer.
