Hello Michael5252,

I believe the movie you recall is Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man.

Also Known As:
Adventures of a Young Man (UK)
Ernest Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man (USA)

?The "official" title of this film is Hemingway's Adventures of a
Young Man; its screenplay is adapted from semi-autobiographical "Nick
Adams" stories written by Ernest Hemingway.?

Below you will find references where you can confirm that this is the
correct movie.

A New York Times Review provides a similar account of the film below:

?Played by Richard Beymer (West Side Story), Nick Adams is a young
Michigan boy who sets out in the early 1900s to learn about life and
to pursue a journalistic career. No sooner is he on his way than he
gets his first taste of "real life" by being thrown off a train by a
railroad agent. He attempts to secure newspaper work, but is laughed
out of the office due to his inexperience. He gains valuable insight
on the human condition while serving in the Italian army during World
War One, where (in Farewell to Arms fashion) a star-crossed romance
develops between Nick and a Red Cross nurse (Susan Strasberg). Nick
returns to America determined to pursue his destiny by writing of his
now-vast experiences.?

Users Comments:

?This film attempts to compile all or most of Hemingway's Nick Adams
stories into one complete whole. The effect is a coming of age story
that ends on a bitter/semi-sweet note.?

?There is a sequence that reminds one of Farewell to Arms (wounded
ambulance driver falls in love with nurse, who eventually dies in his
arms).?

?There is the overbearing, controlling, religious mother and the
anguished father (who eventually takes his own life).?

?There is the hard boiled newspaper editor, who gives sound hard boiled advice.?

Users Comments:

?The likable Beymer was just right as the backwoods 19 year old eager
to leave the lakeside cabin and taste the world. Finally he makes his
plunge and, after almost calling it quits, makes it to the big apple
while meeting several interesting characters along the way. His
visions of the 'new world' didn't pan out as he had dreamed and he
winds up involved in a world war. This was the pivotal event which
caused the boy to become a man giving him the underpinning to take on
a life formerly denied because of inexperience.?
