I ran some diagnostics and it appears to be a 'component failure'.

This sounds pretty hopeless to me.

Is it?

It's a PC-type machine.

Should all else fail and you need to recover data I can from
experience heartily recommend Runtime Software's GetDataBack
http://www.runtime.org/
amongst other crashes I have used this to successfully recognise and
recover a drive even the system BIOS would not acknowledge existed
