Question ID: 436180
My new computer, which I am building, will not power on. I have a
D945psn motherboard, with a Pentium D 820 processor. I have an
ATX12V2.0 350w power supply and 2x1gig 533mhz ddr2. I tried to power
up with an ATX12V1.01 power supply and everything stopped after half a
second and other than the ram led and the power led on the case front
I can get no respone to the power, no fans, no boot. The hard drive
and dvd are on IDE not sata. I have tried removing and replaceing
everything including the clock battery but nothing changes. I have an
x1600 512 vram video card in the PCI express slot with no individual
power connection, it does not have one. I'm stumped and the intel web
site wasn't helpful. All cables are plugged in and everything has
been double checked for compatibilty and seating. Please help.

Hi,

We need to troubleshoot what is causing the problem.

Please unplug everything except for the video card, one stick of RAM,
the CPU and the power switch and see what happens. This also means
unplugging the LED connectors, reset switch etc.

Please let me know the result.

Thanks.

I have unplugged everything but the processor, video card, one stick
of ram, and the power switch. Nothing happened except the ram LED
came on which is part of the motherboard.

Hi,

No beeps at all? No LED diagnostics on the motherboard?
Check for any shorts on the bottom or on the board.
Is there any loose component on it or underneath it?
Failing that, sounds like a dead motherboard.

Thanks.

The power supply is good, the RAM is good, the video card is unknown
but it does not power up without the video card installed. With and
without the processor it does not power up. No beeps, no video feed,
only the RAM LED and case power LED

ok step #1. unhook the power supply and jump pin#19 (green) to pin#20
(black right next to it). if the power supply fan spins there is about
a 99% chance that the power supply is in good working order. if this
is the case go to step #2 if not try another power supply.

Step #2 make sure the power cord is unpluged. With nothing but the
power supply plugged into the board... no processor, ram, hard drives,
or anything... try to power it on.(you should not have the case
switches pluged in at this point...ie power reset hd busy light... so
it should come on when you plug the ac cable into an outlet if it does
not try it with the case switches). if the fan on the pwr supply spins
there's a 100% chance the pwr supply is good. and a 75% chance the
board is good. you can go to step 3. if the fan didn't spin try
another mother board.

Step #3 plug the case switches up... power, hd busy light,... if it
powers on got step #4 if it doesn't try another case.

Step #4 plug in the processor. if it powers on go step #5 if not try
another processor.

Step #5 try pluging in ram one stick at a time powering up after each
stick. if this works goto step six if it doesn't there a 50/50 chance
between the ram being bad or the board being bad..

Step #6 hook up video card. and monitor and try to power up if this is
ok you should be able to get to the system messages to see what the
problem is. if this doesn't work. well if you have on board video you
can try to get video that way. if neither of these work let me know
and we will go deeper into the troubleshooting procedures for a
motherboard.

hope this helps

I saw where someone else was having a problem with a pci card being in
the slot and it would not boot. He stated that if he used an old keyed
pci card it would work (Matrox Mystique 2mb PCI graphic card). But you
say that without any video card, it will not boot. A new bios update
was released on Jan 16, dont know if that is the one you have. Try
crzyndl-ga's suggestion and if you do a google search for D945PSN boot
problem you will see that others are having simular issues. I just
ordered the bundle and hope I do not have the same problems.
