Hi there --

I'm working on the manuscript for a reference book, in Microsoft Word.

I'd like to be able to able to use *symbolic* references of some sort,
recurring throughout the text, and have it equate to some definable
font/character ... And then later, if need be, change the value of
the definition in one place, and have all the references to it update
to the new font/character automatically.

This technique would be specifically *instead* of doing a Find/Replace
to change all of the (hundreds of) references to a given character
individually.

Then, ideally, the resulting "rendered" text would import
transparently into the page layout software InDesign.

Does this make any sense, and can I do this in Word? [If it matters,
I primarily use Word X for Mac (SP1)].

Kindly let me know if this question needs any clarification.

Many thanks!

Ron D.

Have you tried using Styles?

I didn't think Styles, since a style doesn't seem to let you assign
ASCII character(s), i.e., actual content ...?

But I'm playing around with some other stuff now, and it looks like
Bookmarks, Set fields and Field Codes may be what I was after ...
