Hi jjmb,

Have you tried the Bronte Library Enquiry Service?

Research Facilities: enquiry service:
"The library accepts written enquiries and there is a charge of £10
per hour for staff time. The enquiry service is free to Brontė Society
members."

Good luck!

jimb-ga,

Can you tell us anything more about where you came across this text in

Any additional details may be a help in tracking down the source.

Thanks.

To pafalafa-ga

My Aunt, a retired English school teacher has used the text before and
swears it's a Bronte text but she cannot remember which Bronte,
etc....... She taught Bronte and Shakespeare throughout her
professional life as well as having spent a great deal of time at
Bronte locations, however I'm not convinced its Bronte. My Aunt also
spent a lot of time with Daphne DuMaurier. The reference to the
"stinging steel" throws me off a bit. Would Brontes have used the
word "steel" at the time of their writings?

a search of each of the Bronte sister's writings at The Literature
Network ( http://www.online-literature.com/author_index.php ), shows
no match for this bit of poetry. It almost certainly is not from a
novel (including Jane Eyre), because it is in verse.

It sounds to me like something by the Canadian poet Robert Service.

Just FYI: I sent your excerpt to my aunt, who taught English
Literature in college for over 30 years. She didn't recognize it.

Happy New Year to all and thanks to all of you for trying to find author.

I have read all comments and still there is no correct answer. I
notice tim182-ga writes that it's Jane Eyre! Need chapter and page
number of where it appears in Jane Eyre! I don't believe it's from
Jane Eyre however, my aunt believes its from one of the Bronte's.
Would Bronte's have used the word "steel" in their works? The text
speaks of "the stinging steel of the rain.........." Please all, keep
trying. The text does exist somewhere......
