Dear All
I have a friend who has just quit a course by a private college. She
quit as she believes the level of teaching was incredibly bad. Also
more to the point the course was meant to get her a job in her chosen
field. She realises that completing the course would actually be
DETRIMENTAL to her finding suitable employment.
She is now been harassed both by the college itself and the local
goverment loans authority to pay up what she regards as a derisory
amount of money.
I have advised her to seek the advice of a good lawyer.
Thus My question is this Please supply me with the names of 3 or 4 law firms
that can help my friend with her dilemma. The law firms should be
based in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area Canada)
Kind Regards

Hello dprk007-ga,
What specialty lawyer are you looking for? What is the cause of your
friend's dissatisfaction? Is she alleging breach of contract? Is she
claiming that the school didn't deliver what it promised? It seems to
me that unless the school made promises to her that they didn't meet
your friend has no grounds for a lawsuit. What kind of school is it?
Is it a trade school that promises employment? Have other students
complained about the quality of teaching?
I look forward to your clarification.

Hi CZH
Apologies for my slow reply to your clarifications
To answer your questions:
>What specialty lawyer are you looking for?
That really is part of my question as my friend's issue does not
appear to neatly fit in with any legal speciality (Consumer
protection, family law, employment law, Criminal Law) She did contact
an employment lawyer but they
were not interested.
>What is the cause of your friend's dissatisfaction?
In essence the level of teaching was well abysmal. Instruction and
feedback were non-existant. She was told to buy certain textbooks ,
read them in the class and do a series of proscribed evercises. There
was an "instructor" to help in case she got stuck. However he was on a
learning curve and thus was not
always very helpful.
>Is she alleging breach of contract?
Well I suppose it depends what you mean by a contract. Again this is
why my friend nees the services of a lawyer. If you go into a
restaurant and the meal is inedible you would not pay for it as there
is an implied contract which was not honoured. If you bought a car
from a dealership and it would not run then you would want your money
back from the dealership.
Same thing here. My friend enrolled in a course where some fundamental
things about the service normally expected did not materlise.
>Is she claiming that the school didn't deliver what it promised?
Yes absolutely. She was promised all sorts of stuff in the initial
interview with the school which she feels were not honoured.
>What kind of school is it?
It is a Private school which specialises in "fast track" back to employment
course of study.
>Is it a trade school that promises employment?
I think trade school may be a fair description. Very few of these
organisations will guarantee employment. However my freind explained
they
make many statements implying thir graduates have no problem securing
employment in their chosen field.
>Have other students complained about the quality of teaching?
Absolutely. To verify please do the following (apologies for my
somewhat cryptic way of doing this)
on the google search engine key in the following and then search
- third letter of the alphabet
- fourth letter of the alphabet
- ninth letter of the alphabet
space
- nineteenth letter of the alphabet
- twenty-first letter of the alphabet
- third letter of the alphabet
- eleventh letter of the alphabet
- nineteenth letter of the alphabet
Kind Regards

Hello again dprk007-ga,
Is this the school your friend is complaining about? If yes I'm afraid
that her complaints are probably valid but the odds of her getting any
relief are remote. There is lots of information about similar
complaints about CDI Colleges but they have deep pockets (see their
parent company, Corinthian Colleges, Inc.) and my guess is that
whatever agreements your friend signed are boilerplate that would be
hard to challenge. It's unfortunate that your friend didn't
investiogate them before signing up and paying any fees.
Maybe another researcher can help you find a lawyer to pursue this.
Good luck.

Yes it is indeed the college to which you refer. And as you have
noticed there are many complaints out there about them.
My friends intention is to pay them possibly a nominal amount. (She
has a loan but the college is also charging extra fees for time she
spent there)
She would like to negotiate a price with them. But no one in the
college is willing to talk to her. They are just sending her demands
for payment.
That is mwhy she would like some straightforward legal advice.
Sincerely
