Please let me know via the ?clarification? feature if this list of
common school names would suit your purpose even though it includes
all kinds of schools, not only middle and high schools?

Alternatively, I can tell you how many public middle and high schools
(Grade7-12) there are with the names Highland, Jefferson, Kennedy,
Washington, King, Jackson, Liberty, Independence, Harrison, Hamilton,
Grant , Franklin, Edison, Eagle, Douglas, Columbia, Columbus, Clinton,
Central and Centennial. This is from an authoritative source.

Would these figures meet your needs or do you require something else?

Thank you,

Bobbie7

Dave,

I have a listing of about 35,000 *public* high schools and middle
schools, and I can pull out the most common names from this list, if
that would suit your needs. But there are two caveats:

1. No private school names are included, so no matter how popular "St
Mary's" is, it's not going to show on this list.

2. While I can list the ten most popular names, I can't rank them.
There's simply too much variability in the names (Kennedy High, John
Kennedy High, John F Kennedy High, JFK High....), to be able to
reliably add up the numbers and distinguish #1 from #3, etc. However,
I can certainly list out the top ten.

Let us know your thoughts on this.

Excuse me for not being more specific previously. Historical data
isn't acceptable. Mixed data including Grade schools is not
acceptable. Public and private schools both are acceptable.

To clarify further.
The top 10 High schools and the top 10 Middle (Jr) School names *currently*.

Oops sorry. Public schools are required, private can be added but are
not required. thanks again!

Thanks, Dave, but I still need to be sure of one thing.

I can list the Top Ten, but I can't rank them.

In other words, you'll get a list in alphabetical order, rather than
the most common name, second most common, etc.

Is that OK?

Clarification of Question by davebacks-ga on 24 Jan 2006 06:23 PST
pafalafa,
Ranking is required, or at least number of occurences. I understand
that JFK, JK, and Kennedy are variables, but the surname is of most
importance. Heck, if there's an Ethel Kennedy high school that should
count as a Kennedy for this purpose.

Thanks again!

Dave,

Here's the deal. The most popular school names fall into two
categories -- presidents and compass points. The president names I
can count out pretty readily, though I can't easily separate George
Washington High from George Washington Carver High, so you'd have to
live with some ambiguity there.

The compass points are messier. There's Central High, Central Valley
High, Central Boise High, and so on. If you want me to just count all
the Centrals, I can do that. If you want me to distinguish one group
of "Centrals" from another, I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

What do you think?

This is public school data 2003-2004 school year

I did not locate an offical ranking; however I can provide you with
the number of middle schools and high schools with the following words
in them, the same way as I did for the above schools.

These appear to be the most common names.

Franklin
North
West
East
South
White
Highland
Washington
Martin Luther King
Jackson
Liberty
Independence
Harrison
Hamilton,
Grant
Franklin
Edison
Eagle
Douglas
Columbia
Columbus
Clinton,
Centennial

I look forward to your clarification.

Thanks,
Bobbie7

Bobbie7,
I think your answer will be acceptable as long it is the *actual* top
10 for each based upon NCES and not just by guessing the top 10 and
providing counts.

About there. Thanks!

Request for Question Clarification by bobbie7-ga on 24 Jan 2006 16:06 PST
Thank you for your clarification. The NCES doesn't provide a ranking
of common school names.

I can extract the names of 8957 public middle schools in the United States and
give it to you an excel spreadsheet.

I can also extract the names of 10,744 public high schools in the U.S. and
give it to you an excel spreadsheet.

Perhaps there is a program I don't know about that can calculate the
number of repeated words in a document. That would be one way to find
the top 10 names for high schools and middle schools in the U.S.

Other than that, I have no more ideas for now.

Best regards,
Bobbie7

Couldn't find it, you did. The only thing better about this list would
be if it were pre-sorted, but I found a utility to do that so my
answer is complete. Thank you!
