"Silicone: A resin used in the binders of coatings. Also used as an
additive to provide specific properties, e.g., defoamer. Paints
containing silicone are very slick and resist dirt, graffiti and
bacterial growth, and are stable in high heat."

Laws:
California Air Resources Board

"...no person shall, within the District; supply, sell, offer for
sale, apply, or solicit the application of; or manufacture, blend,
repackage for use within the District, any architectural coating
which, at the time of sale or manufacture contains more than 250 grams
of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) per liter of coating excluding
water, exempt organic compounds and any colorant added to tint bases."
REACTIVE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (ROC): Is any volatile compound containing
at least one atom of carbon except those compounds identified in this
Rule as Exempt Organic Compounds. This term and definition shall
replace the following terms and definitions wherever they appear in
the District's Rules and Regulations: organic compound, organic gases,
organic liquid, organic materials, organic vapor, volatile organic
compounds and hydrocarbons.
VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS (VOC): Shall have the same meaning as
Reactive Organic Compounds (ROC) as defined in subsection 215.2 FF. of
this Rule.

Coatings for Masonry and Concrete
July 2003
The conference was attended by over 90 delegates from 20 different
countries, an indication of the wide interest in this important topic.
Twenty one papers were presented, with speakers from the raw material
suppliers, paint companies, universities and other research
institutions. The topics can broadly be put into the categories of
Technology Overview, Alternative Chemistries, New Treatments and
Testing.
The conference proceedings represent a summary of the state-of-the-art
as seen by experts in their fields, and as such provides an invaluable
briefing for those involved in masonry and concrete protection.
Highlights of the proceedings include:
"The recent development of an epoxy modified siloxane for use as an
anti-graffiti coating"
These proceedings are also available on CD-ROM.

Acrylic Hybrid Technology

"Acrylic surface coatings are vehicles in three coatings market
categories: architectural, OEM and special-purpose coatings...
...Improved anti-graffiti coatings are now available from
low-surface-energy acrylic hybrids. Possible acrylic hybrids may
include other inorganic hybrids, for example, phosphate, for enhanced
corrosion protection and smart pigment systems (piezoelectric, color
transition, etc.).
The acrylic hybrid base with vast formulating latitude enables
exploration of a diverse range of hybrid chemistries. Future acrylic
hybrids will combine pigment and filler into hybrid structures, join
with nanochemistry to provide enhanced film properties, and include
inorganic acrylic hybrid structures - all providing new and unique
coating benefits.
