My question about the music industry is two parts:

1. How much do artists and musicians make from different income
streams? (CD sales, concerts, merchandise, licensing their music for
advertisements, etc.) I realize the actually dollars will vary
depending on how popular the artist is, but I?m looking for something
like a percentage of total income for each profit stream. A typical
breakdown of the revenue for each of these streams (how much to venue,
label, promoter, etc) would also be useful. This data can be for pop
bands as well as local acts.

(note: I have details about CD economics from another question:

2. Has the ratio of ?mega-bands? to lesser known bands increased or
decreased over the last 5-10 years? Is audience fragmentation leading
to a larger ?middle class? of recording artists?

While opinions and articles from experts in the music industry are
useful, I?m really looking for statistics, charts, numbers, and market
research. Thank you in advance!
