Question ID: 437009
I have a Dell Precision 340 workstation with a linksys WMP54G (no
version) PCI adapter sending data to a linksys WRT54G ver.2 (firmware
v4.20.7). The router is connected to cable internet. The Dell
wireless is connected to the internet. Yes the internet works on the
Dell wireless. However, I am unable to ping the Dell Precision IP
address (192.16.8.1.101) or the router IP addres (192.168.1.1). When
I ping to either I get the message transmit failed, error code 65. I
would like the PC that is connected by wire to the router to be able
to see the Dell wireless but it does not find it's IP address. I
thought is was because the Dell has a firewall that was interfering
but I thought I turned the firwall off. The microsoft firewall is off
(running wondows xp). I note there are some scvhost running on my
Dell (is that Norton?) but I do not see any firewalls. The Dell has
Norton systemworks 2005 but I think I disbaled it. If not how can I
be sure I turned it off? I also wonder if my Internet protocol TCP/IP
(network places properties)is the latest etc.

according to Microsoft the most common cause of this is
This behavior occurs because the following conditions are true:
? The Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) feature is enabled.
? Firewall software from Zone Labs, is installed on the computer.
ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarmPro are examples of Zone Labs firewall
software.
? The ZoneLabs firewall software is not correctly configured for ICS.

this can still happen even if Zone Alarm is not running
if you have Zone Alarm running or have had it installed previously you
will probably need to uninstall it
under some circumstances this may require uninstalling in safe mode
some people have reported reinstalling Zone Alarm afterwards with no problem

The zone alarm had been uninstalled but I found an article about how
to show hidden files and the article told me the files to delete.
Sure enough your advice was correct. Total removal of zone alarm
solved the problem. You answered the question & deserve the money if
you want. You know how to search microsoft better than I. Thanks.
