Several years ago (5+) there was a case on the east coast, where two
young college students delivered a baby and then killed there own
child at a hotel. The case received national attention. The defense
attorney for the boy had the boy take the long way into the court
house for his first appearance. The defense attorney used this as a
photo op. The boy was wearing a baseball cap as he walked into court.
My question is: what was the final out come of the case.

Dear klim-ga;

Thank you for allowing me to answer your interesting question.

Amy Grossberg, the 19-year old New Jersey teen accused of killing her
newborn baby in Newark, Delaware hotel in November 1996, ultimately
pleaded guilty to manslaughter. She delivered the baby at a Comfort
Inn with the help of her boyfriend (at the time), Brian C. Peterson
Jr., a student at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. According to CNN
?Grossberg and Peterson claimed the baby was stillborn. But state
medical examiners said that the boy was born alive and died of
multiple skull fractures caused by blunt trauma and shaking.?

In March 1998, Peterson pled guilty to manslaughter in exchange for
his testimony against Grossberg at her trial (but he never had to).
When Grossberg learned in detail what Peterson planned to say under
oath against her, she too agreed to a plea bargain on April 22.

In July 1998 both defendants pled guilty to a charge of manslaughter
and each received an 8-year prison sentence with 5-1/2 years suspended
(Grossberg was expected to actually serve 2 ½ years in prison and
Peterson, for his role, was expected to actually serve 2 years in
prison.) Grossberg was also sentenced to one-year home detention upon
her release.

Here are their respective plea agreements:

Here is a summary of the sentencing:

?Both Grossberg, 19, and Peterson, 20, received eight-year sentences.
But Grossberg had all but the two-and-a-half years suspended while
Peterson had six years suspended. Because Grossberg has already served
64 days in prison, she will actually serve only two years and four
months in prison.?

Brian Peterson was released from prison in January 2000 after serving
only 18 months of his sentence. He was in the news briefly just 8
months after his release (and still on probation) when he was arrested
on a charge of interfering with police after a friend allegedly threw
a bottle at Atlanta Braves pitcher John Rocker at Shea Stadium.

He very well could have been sent back to prison but a judge accepted
the recommendation of Peterson?s Parole Officer and decided to let him
slide on disorderly conduct and harassment charges (Prosecutors in
Queens, N.Y., later dropped the charge that Peterson interfered with
police) if he didn?t get into any more trouble for six months.
Apparently Peterson was able to do that because he did not go back to
prison.

Grossberg was released eight months early for ?good behavior? in May
2000 after serving only 22 months. Presumably both of these young
people are now trying to carry on with their private lives, and as you
know, we cannot provide much information about private individuals
once they fade from the spotlight and are, once again, legally
entitled to a certain amount of privacy.

I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you
have any questions about my research please post a clarification
request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating
and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again
in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.
