Question ID: 437168
Were there other militias besides Ethan Allen's famous "Green Mt.
Boys," from the Vermont area fighting during the first years of the
American Revolution? If so, where could I obtain information about
their uniforms (if they had any!) and their activities during 1775-6?

As for the first part of your question I have found references to
other militia but little in the way of activity and nothing in the way
of uniforms. Would you like me to identify as many of these groups as
I can for you as an answer, keepin in mind that there weren't a great
many of them?

I have since found a photo of authentic reactor's of one of the
Militias in uniform if you decide to acept my information as an
answer. The source also includes some very useful information about
this unit's activities and unit's organizational structure.

Please disregard. After researching these units further it appears
that they are all somewhat later than the dates you specified. Your
question remains open.

Dear tutuzdad,

Thank you for a valiant effort - I am still hoping to find information
on any Vt. militias active in the summer of 1775- spring of 1776. It
may be the Green Mt. Boys were the only "organized" group fighting
from that area at that time...You may have come across the rangers who
were organized a year later...

Best,

Indeed it seems that the Green Mountin Boys were for forerunner of
Vermont's Militia in that time frame:

"The Green Mountain Boys later formed the basis of the Vermont militia
which selected Seth Warner as its leader."

Is the absence of any other militias a good answer?

Dear Tutuzdad,

Well, if that's the right answer. Unfortunately, I don't live anywhere
near the NE where I could go rooting around and dig up my own answers
and find out for sure. I'd like to keep the answer open for a while
longer and see if anyone else nibbles and knows something about Vt.
militias that we don't. If no one offers any further information in
the next week or so, I'll officially accept your answer. Thanks again.

Very good. In the meantime I will continue to look in the event there
is something I might have missed.

I have conducted many hours of research into your question for several
days now and have found no verifieable evidence whatsoever that there
were any named or known militias in Vermont during the time period you
specified other than Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys.

How shall we proceed?

While you folks are considering your next move, I'd just like to
comment on some resources that may be useful to you both, if you
haven't come across them already:

Ethan Allen and the Green-Mountain heroes of '76. With a sketch of the
early history of Vermont. By Henry W. De Puy ...
Author: De Puy, Henry W. (Henry Walter), 1820-1876.

If nothing else, these books are notable for the really unpleasant
portrait of Ethan Allen -- was he really that unappealing-looking...?

Both books are fully searchable, and in a cursory look through them, I
must agree with tutuzdad -- I did not see any references to organized
militia in Vermont prior to the Green Mountain Boys planning to invade
Canada, or whatever it was they were doing up there.

Best of luck on this one,

Dear tutuzdad,

Hm, I can't seem to find a way to officially accept your answer except
to tell you. Maybe there's something you can do on your end - I'm not
familiar enough with this service. I think the system thinks we're
still in the clarification stage and isn't giving me the option to
click on something to accept your answer. Anyway, I'm happy to pay up
if you know how I can from here!

Dear pollywog-ga

Thank you for accepting my research as a formal answer. After many
hours of tedious research it appears that by all accounts Ethan
Allen?s Green Mountain militia was the only named or known operational
Vermont militia during the time frame you specified. While several
other militias do appear to be present at later dates and several
unorganized, rag-tag groups from different states might have gathered
to combine with, or add to the number of Allen?s group in order to
form the Green Mountain militia, it seems that this was the first and
most likely the only organized group of it?s kind in the early years
of the conflict.

The closest I came in my research was a group called Rogers Rangers
commanded by Major Robert Rogers from 1756-1763 (disbanded in 1763 or
1764) that was actually a ?Twin State Militia? comprised of groups
from both New Hampshire and Vermont:

I hope you find that my answer exceeds your expectations. If you have
any questions about my research please post a clarification request
prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your
final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the
near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us.

PS: And you will also note that Rogers' Rangers was a group of
colonial militia that fought for the British so this is probably not
the type of Militia you had in mind.
