Exact figures for book sales are difficult to come by. I have found
several reports that it was over a million, but nothing more specific.
Is that sufficient for an answer?

Hi thanks for you post. Could you let me know the source (and rough
date) of the reports e.g. article in NY Times 1995. That would do it
for me.

Dear richtcore-ga,

Thank you for the clarification. As I indicated, details of exact
figures for book sales are notoriously difficult to find.

The book was in the UK?s Times newspaper?s Top Ten Best Selling Books
list for at least two years. One article on the book and the treasure
hunt from the Times newspaper on Friday July 31st 1981 reported that
400000 books were reported to be sold in the UK. Later articles
indicate that there were extensive sales abroad as well.

A later review of the book Quest for the Golden Hare by Bamber
Gascoigne. (Bamber Gascoigne had been privileged to the location of
the hare from the very beginning) stated that the book was published
in 1979 by Cape and that the hare was dug up in February 1982, ?after
a million copies of the book had been sold? - Times Newspaper August
25th 1983.

This figure appears in many later sources right up to last year.

?Sunday August 28, 2005
The Observer
Masquerade, by the artist Kit Williams - which contained clues to the
whereabouts of a jewelled golden hare he had buried at Ampthill in
Bedfordshire - sold more a million copies and sparked a frenzy of
nationwide digging.?

This web site has information on the author and also refers to a
million. It links to an audio interview of Williams which is 17
minutes long. I have not listened to it. Whether it contains reference
to book sales I do not know.

I hope this answers your question. If it does not, or the answer is
unclear, then please ask for clarification of this research before
rating the answer. I shall respond to the clarification request as
soon as I receive it.
Thank you
