Can someone tell me the number of subacute care facilities in the
United States? I would like information for the most recent year
possible, but anything after 2000 will work.

Depends what you mean.

There are about half a million "ambulatory health care" establishments
in the US. These include doctor's office, dentists, drop-in
facilities, and so on.

Of these, about 25,000 are considered "outpatient care centers".

Do either of these classifications cover your intended meaning of
"sub-acute care centers"?

Hello pafalafa,

Subacute care is comprehensive inpatient care designed for someone who
has an acute illness, injury or exacerbation of a disease process.
Candidates for subacute care generally require between four and seven
hours of skilled nursing care and one to five hours of therapy daily.
Subacute care is generally more intensive than traditional nursing
facility care and less than acute care.

Many nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities provide subacute
care, but I don't know what percentage.

Subacute Care Units

?Nursing homes are also expanding to cover subacute care. Subacute
care is increasingly becoming acceptable as an alternative to
cost-effective health care delivery model. Subacute care units of
nursing facilities are emerging in response to the need to provide
care to patients who suffer from medical conditions or are recovering
from surgical procedures and require a broad range of medical and
rehabilitative services.?

50 percent

?More than 50 percent of nursing home admissions today come from
hospitals, and most patients need care for unstable medical
conditions.?

Subacute care

?It?s a booming field,? says Samantha Morgan, RN, BSN, director of
rehabilitation services for Tendercare, a network of subacute
facilities in Michigan. ?

?Subacute units may be separately licensed units within a hospital or
are more likely to be located in separate facilities.?

"According to the American Subacute Care Association, subacute care
has almost doubled in the last two years to become a $3.5 billion
business."

14,600 subacute care providers in 1995

"According to the Prospective Payment Assessment Commission (PROPAC),
the number of subacute care providers rose 29% over a 5-year period,
up to 14,600 in 1995; hospital-based subacute care is the fastest
growing area, accounting for 28% of skilled nursing stays.8 The
estimated patient volume is 8.1 million a year with annual revenues
between $2.4 to $3.8 billion. Clearly, for PSOs, subacute care
presents tremendous opportunity to succeed financially in the health
care market. Hospital-based subacute care would complete the full
continuum of health care integration."

Hi bobbie7!

The last link "14,600 subacute care providers in 1995" is exactly what
I am looking for, however it is from 1995. If there is any estimation
that is more recent (hopefully 2000 or later) it will be extremely
helpful. Or a percentage of skilled nursing facilities or nursing
homes that provide subacute care will work.

California Association of Health Facilities states that "15 percent,
of California?s 1,440 licensed nursing facilities currently provide
subacute care."
http://www.cahf.org/public/consumer/factstat.php

Can we use the 15 percent to calculate a ballpark figure for the U.S.?

It appears that the 15% figure will work for an estimate.

Jess05,

15 percent of the 17,000 skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) nationwide
would result in 2,550 Subacute Care Facilities in the U.S.

Is this result satisfactory?

Hello again Jess05,

Please disregard my last clarication.

I will use the 15 percent estimate to give you a ballpark figure for
the number of licensed nursing facilities in the U.S. that provide
subacute care.

There were a total of 16,779 licensed nursing facilities in all
regions in the United States in 2001.

There is a table in the center of the following webpage that shows the
total number of licensed nursing facilities in each region, for the
years 1995 and 2001.

http://myziva.net/newsletter.php?letterid=10&myzivanet=e27155e5142c88d729221333e88637b5

According to the California Association of Health Facilities

"15 percent of California?s 1,440 licensed nursing facilities
currently provide subacute care."
http://www.cahf.org/public/consumer/factstat.php

Using this same 15 percent we can estimate that 15 percent of the
United State?s 16,779 licensed nursing facilities provide subacute
care.

This would result in a ballpark figure of 2,517 licensed nursing
facilities providing subacute care in the United States.

I hope the information provided is helpful!

Best regards,
Bobbie7
