What was the number of illegitiment live births (Negro women) in 1940 and 2004.

I believe that prior to 1970, the information you require was not
collected.  I have found two reports which have very detailed
statistics, but neither go back to 1940 in the terms that you require.
 The dates start in 1969 (estimated) and are very comprehensive 1980
onwards. One of the reports is on non-marital child bearing in the US
for the period 1940-99 and is 39 pages long. It confirms that the
detailed population denominators were not available for the early
years.

Historical Statistics of the United States - Colonial Times to 1970
list these stats but "others" are included with the Negro stats. These
stats I will accept if you can interpret the year 1940 for me and give
me the number for 2004.

I am not very familiar with the Historical Statistics of the United
States, but I have had a look, and as far I can see, I am unable to
'interpret the year 1940' statistics for you. The total number of
births to nonmarried women is not broken down by race, and as as I
indicated, figures for that period are not available in the documents
I found. In addition, the latest data I have found only goes up to
2002.
Perhaps another researcher may be able to assist you.
