I see a similar posting in Question ID: 195412 but it is almost two years old and that info does not currently appear on DirecTV's website. In years past retailers have sold DirectTV equipment to Americans living in Baja and advised them to simply install it themselves and activate it using a U.S. address, albeit that this is illegal. My dad in Ensenada did this about 8 years ago and the bill came to my house in San Diego. Everything went swimmingly until I started to get marketing calls from DTV and inadvertently outed him saying this was only his billing address and his service was in Baja. Somewhere along the way I had forgotten it was illegal and well... anyway, my brain lapse screwed it up for him and they cut off his service. He signed up with Sky and he hates it--the programming sucks. But I digress. He gave me his DirecTV dish, receiver and remote. I know that DTV provides free (and newer)equipment and installation with an 18 month committment to subscribe for new customers AND they really push to let them install. HOWEVER... I would like to install the older dish he gave me and subscribe to service using it. I do not want the new equipment nor am I interested in a DVR. I have my reasons for doing this. My questions are: I presume DirecTV is going to discourage me from doing this and push the new equipment and installation angle. I plan on telling them it's already installed and hooked up. What kind of grief are they going to give me? I don't want them to come to my house. I just want them to activate me as a new customer using the equipment my dad gave me and bill me accordingly. As I said I have my reasons for wanting to do it this way. I should also mention as a complication that I actually ordered service about a week ago--the whole free equipment and DVR package and scheduled installation but cancelled it the same day saying I had changed my mind and was going to get DISH. So they may have all this information on me in their computer--that I am a flaky customer and might further question why I am now calling back and no longer want new stuff and free installation. Only thing I can think of to counter with is that I don't want to commit to an 18 month subscription. Recommendations please on how to accomplish what I have outlined. |

Why don't you just call and ask them. You will have to eventually anyway. |
