I am going to be in Cancun, Mexico on vacation next week. It is
critical that I have Internet access during the stay.

I am staying in a resort, they say I can dial out to an ISP but that
is the limit of their service. I don't want to incur international
charges on dialing into an ISP in the US.

What are my cheapest options here?

Thanks,
Suneet

There are internet cafes along the hotel zone in Cancun, but they're
pricey. If you go downtown (El Centro), you'll find some dirt cheap
internet cafes. Well, they're called "cafes", but there is no coffee
in them. Just a small shop with a bunch of computers. And don't be
afraid to take the buses down there to get to El Centro. They're
clean, and safe, and very convenient. Cancun is very tourist friendly.
I think I used one near Mercado 28 (aka El Mercado) which is in
downtown Cancun and a great place to get away from the totally
corporate GAP/PlanetHollywood/Dominos, etc. hotel zone.

Hi, You did not mention if you were bringing a laptop? Some internet
Service providers provide roaming numbers, meaning, they will have a
local number in Cancun, where you can dial that number with the
computer and actually have access to your mail, web pages etc. For
example, here in Canada, Telus is my ISP, and they actually have a
local number that you can call in Cancun, so no long distant charges.
Telus charges a 2$ an hour rate in Cancun which appears on your
internet bill, other ISP's might be free. You can always call the
Tech support line of you Internet Service provider, and they will
configure your laptop so that you can connect once you get there, and
ask them if there are any "roaming charges"! Just remember, if you are
in a hotel, you will have to place a "9" before that number to get
access to an outside line, for Mexican Hotels, it must be the same.
You can always verify with the Hotel themselves. Hope that helps!
Have a nice Vacation!

I forgot to mention that I am bringing a laptop.

I did some research in parallel. Apparently, there is a company called
'GoMobile' which pretty much gives you Internet connectivity anywhere
in the world with local dialing. They have tied up with hundreds if
not thousands of ISPs. The charges in Cancun are $0.15 per minute,
which is not bad at all.

The other option is that I can a local temporary ISP account for $35
for a whole week. This one is through http://www.cancun.com

Thanks all for all the suggestions. I got the El-Centro hang-out place
as a nice bonus.
